He leans forward and drops a kiss on Emily’s head. Once he stands back up, he slams the door closed. Party’s over. We have to leave.
I start the engine of the car and put it in gear, leaving the courtyard without a backward glance.
“Puck, I really can’t go anywhere with you,” Emily starts. “You need to understand this. I am saying no to whatever crazy plan you and my dad think you concocted.”
Her statement makes me bust out laughing.
“Your dad is one of the most feared men in the criminal world, and you think he justconcocteda plan on a whim?”
Her entire body stiffens in distress.
“No,” she spits out, anger now taking over. “I’m just saying that neither one of you has all the information.”
“Yeah?” I smirk at her while keeping one eye on the road and the other in the rearview mirror to make sure we’re not getting followed. “Then why don’t you just tell me what all this information is, babe. That way I’ll know.”
“I can’t!” she yells at me.
“Why is that? What’s more important? You being loyal to Steve or me?”
I don’t mean any of what I say. I know she is not loyal to Steve in the least. But it gets a rise out of her, keeps her angry enough where she doesn’t cry.
“This is not about beingloyal,” she spits out. “This is about people not dying.”
She gasps when she realizes what she just said. This is more than she’s given me since it all started.
“Why would people die, babe?” I soften my voice when I ask. “I thought it was just about Steve getting all your money.”
“It was. And is,” she rushes to say.
“So you would be dying then, babe?” I lift an eyebrow in question. “We’ll make sure he gets all that money, if that’s what’s upsetting you. All the fucking money,” I say and mean it.
Getting to the small private airport right outside of Red Lodge takes us a lot less time than I was expecting. I see the sign for it but keep on going, following Devereaux’s instructions, which takes us to the back gate, just as he said.
“Puck,” Emily’s voice sounds firmer now. “I swear to God that I will jump out of this car right now if you don’t take me back.”
“Can’t,” I shrug.
“Can’t what?” she screeches at me.
“You can’t jump out of the car,” I explain. “Child lock is a wonderful thing. I love it, and it’s definitely come in handy right now. And you know what?”
“What?” she snaps.
“I can’t wait to put a baby in your belly so that I can use the child lock to literally lock a child in the car, like God intended,” I snort as I joke. She’s not laughing though. At all. In fact, quite the opposite.
“Puck,” she sobs. “You need to take me back right away. This is important.”
I stop the car by the private jet Devereaux got waiting for us, ready for takeoff. I lean toward Emily and wrap my hand around the back of her neck, bringing her face closer to mine.
“Babe, there is no fucking way in hell that I will take you back. You need to listen and understand this.”
“Puck,” she is crying harder now. “He is going to hurt us all. I don’t want that. I love you so much, and…”
I ignore everything she just said except for the last part.
“You love me?” I ask and she nods. “Are you sure?”
“Without a doubt, Puck,” she sobs. “I would do anything for you. I would give my life for yours.”
