“Good point, boss,” I nod in agreement.
“Stop calling me that.” He sounds aggravated, but I know that, deep down, he loves it. He lives for this shit.
“I thought you agreed to it. And I like it that way,” I crack up. “I don’t like it when Sully bosses me around.”
“I’ll still boss you around, fucker,” Sully throws at me. “Even more now that the stress of being an actual boss is off me.”
We shoot the shit for a minute before Dylan takes off.
“I hope this shit will be over soon,” Sully sighs as soon as it’s just the two of us.
“You and me, brother,” I mutter while typing away on my computer.
“What’s happening there?” Sully points to the screen.
I wait for a second before replying. Just then, we both get alerts on our cell phones. I look at mine and frown.
“Becca’s house,” Sully confirms that he received the same message. “Why the fuck is this happening?”
The alert is detecting an intruder.
“You check on the cameras there while I deal with this fucker,” I instruct.
We both work in silence for a few minutes when Sully throws his phone on the desk.
“There is absolutely no one showing at her house. This is so weird that it’s happening, isn’t it?”
“What about Devereux’s house?” I ask. I wish I could check myself, but I can’t now that I got this fucker talking to me.
“All seems to be okay there. Becca is there,” Sully informs me, but that just makes me feel worse.
“What about Emily?” My voice is shaking when I ask, and I know he hears it. His response is quick.
“She’s nowhere in sight. What’s going on with you and Emily? I thought I’d see her here at the house more often, but it’s been weeks.”
I swallow hard, debating how much I should tell him. In the end, I decide that it won’t hurt him knowing.
“That fucker she used to see before she and I met, I think he’s working with Bricks.”
I stop tapping on my keyboard, and the room gets really quiet. I turn in my chair slowly until I face my best friend. He looks as cool and calm as always.
“How is that even possible?” he manages to say through clenched teeth.
“He wants the money she inherited from her grandparents. There’s a clause in the will that she can’t give the money away unless it is to a spouse.”
“What. The. Fuck.”
“My thoughts exactly, brother,” I laugh at the face he’s making, but then I get serious. “He’s been drugging her, and he raped her while she was out.”
“Fuck.” I can’t stand the pity on his face at hearing what I’m telling him.
“She’s pregnant,” I add, for more proof of how fucked up out situation is.
“Brother,” Sully shakes his head at me, his eyes looking like they’re about to fall out of his head. “Is the baby…”
“We don’t know.” I pause to swallow the lump in the back of my throat. “But I claimed it as mine. And I married her.”
“Puck, man,” Sully is in shock. No more than I am, that’s for sure.
