“She is in hiding at her father’s house while I try to get Bricks to come out ofhishiding,” I explain.

Sully takes a moment to regroup, rubbing his hands up and down his face, then letting out a long breath.

“Okay, let’s get this show on the road,” he tells me just as the computer dings again.

“I think they’re about to say yes to paying it all upfront.” I can’t hide the glee in my voice. “Call Dylan and tell him not to go to the house by himself. There’s something going on there even though it doesn’t show on camera.”

“Look at you,” Sully teases, “all bossy and shit.”

I give him the finger, then start tapping on the keyboard while he calls our other friend to give him a heads up.

“He says he’ll wait for us before he goes to the house,” Sully tells me once they hang up.

“Wanna bet he won’t?” I smirk and almost roll my eyes.

“Yeah, no doubt,” Sully agrees. “How much longer here?”

I stop typing and just stare at the screen. My eyes go over all the progress I’ve made so far. I know I am missing something. What though?

“Fuck,” I mutter and jump out of my chair. “They’re trying to stall us,” I realize with a start.

“We need to get to Dylan’s. This is an ambush.”

We both scramble to get to the door as fast as we can.

“We’ll take my truck,” Sully decides, and I’m good with it.

My cell phone buzzes in my hand. The instant need to throw up when I look at the screen is real.

Emily: Puck, I wanted to tell you that I had to leave. I don’t think it’s right for the baby not to know its father. And Steve deserves to know his baby. I will send you annulment papers. Thanks for everything.

“What the fuck,” I yell to the sky.

“Now what?”

Instead of answering him, I tap on the app I have to track Emily’s phone. It shows as being located at her father’s office, but I have a feeling that’s not true.

I open the app through which we can access the cameras in Devereaux’s house. It’s empty, with the exception of Malone who is walking alongside the fence line in the backyard.

“Where the fuck are Arlene and Becca?” I snap at Sully.

“I thought they were at…”

“They’re not,” I cut him off. “The house is empty, and Malone is out there by himself.

“This is not good.” Sully stares at me, the wheels turning in his head.

“Not even a little,” I agree.

Emily

I made a mistake.

Steve managed to contact me on this new phone Puck had given me. He assured me that it was a safe one. But Steve got through. He sent me a text pretending to be Puck and told me to make sure I come to my house in Sunny.

Now I am here, Steve looks psychotic, and I am scared.
