“She’s been drugged,” one of the police officers tells me before I even have a chance to ask. “But her vitals are stable. She needs to see a doctor though, seeing she’s pregnant and all.”
I just nod and watch when they bring a stretcher out, then I direct them upstairs to where Emily’s bedroom is.
She never wakes up when they place her on the bed. I watch when one of the guys checks her pulse again.
“She needs to sleep this off, but take her to the hospital when she wakes up.”
I just nod, remaining frozen in the doorway, moving only when they need to walk around me to get out. I briefly wonder what kind of connections Devereux has if the police was able to get Emily out of her house.
They were also able to take Steve away.
“I have him in one of my warehouses,” Devereaux informed me in a cool tone. “We’ll need to go and see what we can get out of him.”
“I want to wait for her to wake up first.” I didn’t want to leave Emily, not even for a second.
“We can’t kill him yet. Not until we know who he’s been working with.”
With that, Devereaux turned around and left, leaving me alone with his daughter.
I now walk toward the bed and take my shoes off right before sliding next to Emily on the soft mattress. I wrap my arm around her, my hand going straight for her belly.
I just lie here, thinking of all the ways I am going to take Steve out of this world. In the back of my mind, there’s something nudging at me, and before long, I can’t stay still any longer.
I kiss the back of Emily’s head, then turn over and sit up in bed, powering my phone to call Sully.
“How is she?” he asks right away.
“She’s just asleep for now.” My eyes go back to Emily. “Can you bring me my laptop from the house?”
“Sure thing,” he says without hesitation.
“One more thing,” I stop him when he is about to hang up. “Go to my room. There’s a silver laptop on the bottom shelf of my nightstand. Bring it to me?”
“Give me thirty.” And now he does hang up.
I am starting to get fidgety as I watch the clock, waiting on Sully to come with my laptops. Emily is still sleeping the effects of the drugs away. I’m sure it was an inhaler they used on her, and I don’t think they were looking to kill her. But the fact that she did inhale it is concerning. If they wanted to kill her and make it look like an accident, all they had to do is have her overdose on the medication. That’d be the easiest murder ever.
The clock is at the twenty-two minute mark when I hear a faint knock on the door. Without making a noise, I get up from the bed and rush to open it. Sully is waiting on the other side, two laptops and a bag in his hand.
“I got you the chargers, too,” he lifts the bag.
“You’re the man,” I give him half a smile and reach for everything.
“I got us more intel,” he informs me.
That gets my attention. I put everything right inside the room, then step into the hallway and close the door behind me.
“Tell me.”
“Wyatt is on the way. He wants to meet with Devereaux about all this,” he starts. “Dylan is still out. The shot is not bad, but he had a blood clot in the head that they had to fix. I guess him getting shot actually saved his ass because he could’ve just dropped dead from the blood clot. There was no way to catch that.”
“Wow,” I swallow around the lump in my throat. “Is he going to be okay?”
“The doctor seems to think so, but only time will tell. He needs to wake up first. You know what’s funny?” Sully smirks in amusement.
“What?”
“His doctor is that guy Becca went out with.”
