“I’ll take care of it,” he assures me.

“No,” I yell. “I don’t want you touching them. Don’t do it.”

“My men will do it,” my father informs us both.

“Dad,” I open my arms to hug him, then promptly start crying even harder than before.

He pulls me into him, holding me for the longest time while Puck rubs the palm of his hand up and down my back.

“We’re going to talk about you leaving,” dad informs me in his casual way. “Not following direct orders is not something I condone.”

“Let’s take her to the doctor first,” Puck comes to my rescue and pulls me away from my dad.

All three of us step outside. Sully is loaded up in one of the SUV’s, taking off with him when Malone gives them the signal to.

I look around the quiet street where I’ve lived for the last two years. I loved it here, thought it was amazing.

I wonder if my neighbors suspect anything of what just happened inside my house.

I wonder if I’ll ever come back here.

When Emily pulledthe trigger and Kenny’s brains splattered, making a bit of a mess, my mind automatically shut down. In my head, I was seeing my mother, once again walking down the dock by the lake, turning around to smile at me, then…

As I expected her to pull the trigger, she just remained smiling. She stayed like that for a while before mouthing to me, “Thank you.”

I shook my head, trying to clear all the mess floating around in it. When I finally snapped out of it, Emily’s arms were wrapped around me, her voice full of worry as she asked if I was okay.

After I kissed her like both of our lives depended on it, we had to leave. Devereaux was already busy with his team as he organized the cleanup of the bodies at Emily’s house.

Now, we are at the hospital where I need to make sure not only that my wife is okay, but also our baby.

“We’ll go in through the back,” I tell Emily when we pull into the parking lot.

She hesitates for a second, her eyes watching me with apprehension.

“I thought everyone was… dead. Is there anything else we should be worried about right now?”

I almost laugh at the way she pulls her shoulders back when she takes a deep breath to declare everyone as having expired.

“I just figured you wouldn’t want the people you worked with to see you like this,” I look her up and down. Her hair is all over the place, she has a couple of holes in her top, and I’m not going to be the one telling her that she has a few blood stains on it as well.

“Do I look bad?” she drops her head down to take an inventory of herself.

“You’re a beautiful mess, babe,” I laugh again.

She shakes her head and sighs. “Well, at least I can count on you to be honest with me and not let me go out in public when I shouldn’t.”

“You got that right. I’m saying it with love,” I make sure to add, for my own safety.

We start walking toward the entrance of the hospital, her hand holding mine tight enough where I should wonder about blood circulation.

“Do you know who’s going to see me?” she finally asks, and now I understand why she’s so nervous. “I normally see Dr. Patel, but I don’t think his office at the hospital is open this late in the day.”

“Sully’s friend will direct us as soon as…”
