I have to agree with Morgan’s assessment. I only tried it for the one time, and it put me straight to sleep. It is a mystery how Emily was able to use it and walk around like that.
“It would have killed you eventually,” Morgan adds, her voice getting softer now.
“What about the note someone slipped in my locker?” Emily asks, refusing to back down, but sounding less confident now.
“I don’t know anything about any notes,” Morgan declares. “But I can promise you that my only involvement in the situation you’re in is through Blake.”
Emily takes a deep breath in, her cheeks puffing when she holds it in before finally letting it back out. She is thinking things through, and I fight back a grin when she talks.
“I’m sorry I misjudged you like that, Morgan,” she apologizes. “I… I don’t know what else to say. I’m sorry.”
“Apology accepted,” Morgan nods at her. “Are you going to come back to work?”
“Probably not,” Emily admits, taking me by surprise. “My heart is not in it anymore.”
“I figured as much.”
Morgan moves around the room, pulling a piece of medical equipment closer to the hospital bed Emily is sitting on.
“Let’s take a look at your baby, okay?” she smiles at both of us. “You’ll need to come back and see your doctor,” she adds. “But I can give you a quick exam right now, just for your piece of mind.”
“Thank you,” Emily sighs in relief and lies back on the bed.
“I’m just going to take a look at the baby, so pull your shirt up,” her now former boss instructs. I get closer to the bed until I can touch it, smiling nervously at my woman when she grabs my hand for support.
“I warmed this up for you,” Morgan says right before squirting some gel all over Emily’s belly. That’s followed by the ultrasound wand that is attached to the machine she pulled closer moments ago.
Shortly after she touches it to Emily’s belly, we hear a whooshing sound echoing around the room.
“It’s up on the screen on the wall,” Morgan smiles at me when she notices my confusion. “I thought you’d both like to see a clear image of the baby better.”
I am speechless when my eyes connect to the picture on the large TV like screen that is attached to the wall. I blink a few times, trying to clear the water suddenly filling them.
“Very strong heartbeat,” Morgan comments as she moves the wand around on Emily’s belly. “That’s a good thing,” she assures us both. “And I am not expert at this, but it looks like a completely healthy baby to me. This is your first scan, right?”
“Yes,” Emily says, the fact that she is crying obvious in her voice.
“They’ll do all the measurements when you come back, but if I were to guess, I’d say you’re somewhere close to twenty weeks along, and everything is developed as it should be.”
“Can you tell what it is?” Emily asks with a hiccup at the end.
Morgan moves around a bit more, and I watch in fascination as we see the baby from all sides. At some point, I think he is sucking on his thumb, making me smile through the tears. He looks happy and relaxed in his mama’s belly.
“I think it’s a bit too early for me to see it in here,” Morgan murmurs after a few more tries. “But a blood test should tell you that, no problem.”
She clicks on her keyboard a few times until a printer goes off on the desk that’s in the room. When she takes the wand away from Emily’s belly, the baby disappears from the screen, and I want to grab her hand and put it back.
“We’ll come back,” Emily’s squeezes my hand again. “If you want to come with me, I mean,” she hesitates.
“Babe,” I give her a look of disappointment. “Are you fucking kidding me right now? I wouldn’t miss any of this for the world. I hope you know that.”
“Here’s a printout,” Morgan interrupts us by shoving a large piece of paper in my hand. “You can take it home and stare at it at your pleasure,” she winks at me, then starts cleaning Emily’s belly of the gunk she put on so the wand would glide.
Once she’s done, she takes off the gloves she put on before starting all this and gives us a smile. It looks warmer and inviting than when we first came in. I guess we all know where the other one stands now.
“I’ll give you guys a few minutes. The room is not booked for the rest of the night, so take your time. Just no funny business in here,” she points at both of us. She doesn’t seem like the type to joke around like that, so both me and Emily are just staring at her.
“Thank you, Morgan,” Em whispers softly from the bed. “This means a lot to me, and I appreciate you doing it.”
