Looking a bit frazzled than before, Laura looks through the folder she brought with her until she finds the document Coach Harris is asking for.

“Here you go, sir,” she hands the papers over with a flourish.

There are a couple of minutes of uncomfortable silence as Coach reads everything over, looking very thorough in his task.

“This is only one,” he looks at Laura over his reading glasses.

“There’s plenty of information in there to count for ten,” she rebuttals.

“Miss Cantor,” he leans back against his seat. He takes the glasses off and throws them on the desk between us. “You have no ground to stand on,” he informs her. “Now get out of mydamn office so I can discipline my player the way I see fit. You’re wasting my time.”

Laura’s eyes are about to fall out of her head.

“Coach Harris, with all due respect, this is not proper procedure…”

He doesn’t even blink.

“Miss Cantor, with all due respect… Get out.”

Chapter 19

Xander

“Fuck, man, please tell me what happened in there!”

Noah is following me as we both walk out of the arena at the same time. He purposely waited for me so that he could get all the scoop.

“Nothing happened,” I shrug and continue walking. My bag feels heavier than usual as I carry it back to my apartment.

I stop when we reach the street we need to cross to get to our building. The traffic is a bit heavier than the usual around this time of day. I press on the button for the pedestrian sign to come on and wait.

“What do you mean nothing?” Noah refuses to give up. “You were in there forever. And I saw the HR chick leaving Coach’s office. She had the hot intern with her,” he adds. “Did you get fired in front of the hot intern then?”

I roll my eyes toward the sky, then remain with my head back for a while. I can see my breath as it travels higher toward the heavy snow clouds. They look bright somehow against the gray sky.

I drop my head back down just in time to see Noah stepping off the sidewalk to get in front of me. I watch in horror as a bus heads our way, and, without a second thought, I reach and grab him by the hood of his coat, stepping back and pulling him with me.

The heavy bag I have on my shoulder is in the way and I end up tripping over it. Thank God for the heavy coat and hat that I have on because I barely feel the ground under me when I hit it with my back. I can’t say the same for the front when Noah’s heavy weight drops on top of me.

Horns honk all around us and someone yells something from the distance. All I can see though is my teammate’s shocked face as he stares down at me.

“I think you saved my life,” he finally says, obvious shock lacing the tone of his voice.

I shake my head at him. “You’re such a dumbass. Get the fuck off me. You’re lucky if we didn’t break anything.”

He scrambles to get off me, and I sit up as soon as his weight is no longer pushing on my chest.

“What the fuck were you thinking?” I yell at him when he ends up in the same sitting position as me.

“I don’t even know what the fuck happened to be honest,” he lifts both shoulders in confusion. “We were just talking, and…”

“And you stepped in front of a fucking bus,” I interrupt him. I drop my head in my hands and rub my cheeks up and down a couple of times before pushing myself back up.

The light for pedestrians is flashing green by now, so we can finally cross the street. I pick up my bag and do just that, not paying attention to Noah to see if he is coming too or not.

“You know what this means?” he suddenly speaks from my side.

“What does what mean?” I snort in amusement. He acts like a little kid for sure.
