“I love you, Abigail Bennett. I’d be honored if you wanted to represent me in this mess I made of my life.”

She promptly bursts into tears. “I love you, too. I thought you’d never say it back.”

“Baby,” I pull her back into my chest. “We’ve already established I’m an idiot, remember?”

She snorts, then laughs, then gives me a soft kiss, throwing worried looks toward my nose.

“You never told me which team wants me.” The thought just hits me.

She takes a deep fortifying breath.

“Don’t get mad,” she warns. “It’s the New York Sliders.”

I don’t blink for the longest time.

“There’s more,” Abby whispers, worry obvious in her voice.

I don’t say a word and just wait her out.

“You have a very small window to accept the offer from the Sliders. The transfer portal is closing in ten days,” she explains. “That includes weekends, so, really, you only have eight days. It’s going to be intense.”

“That it?” I ask when she pauses to take a breath.

“I… yes.”

Laughter erupts from deep inside my chest. I laugh until I feel my head wanting to split from the pain.

Karma got me again.

Chapter 34

Abby

“I’m sure your brother would’ve loved it had I moved into his spare bedroom,” Xander laughs. His voice comes out nasally, and I can tell that whatever meds they gave him are now starting to wear off. He is hurting.

“Yeah, he would’ve been tickled to death,” I whisper into the quiet room.

After he got discharged, we ended up checking into the hotel where I stayed for a few days before I made contact with my brother.

“Come here.”

Xander makes a fist into my hair and gently pulls me up his chest until our eyes are on the same level.

“I’ve missed you so fucking much these last couple of weeks,” he tells me. I can see pain in his eyes, and I know it’s not just from his nose having been broken. “When I saw the headlines of your engagement…”

He gets chocked up and needs a moment to continue. My eyes instantly fill with tears.

“I’m so sorry,” I try to tell him.

I have been apologizing for this over and over despite the fact that I had nothing to do with the announcement.

“My parents were set on me marrying Wesley,” I explain. “My mother in particular wanted me to have his last name. It is an old and respected last name, and…”

“Old and respected?” Xander snorts. “How old is this Wesley character? Were you about to marry an old man?”

“What? No!” I bust out laughing. “Wesley is the same age as my oldest brother. Nothing creepy going on there.”

“Well, that doesn’t make me feel any better, Abigail,” Xander informs me in a mocking tone, but he then gets serious. “Were you ever in love with Wesley?”
