I switch over to the other call without waiting for them to say their goodbyes, and the next fifteen minutes go by in a flurry of back and forth with the attorney. I have real tears running down my face when I hear his next words.

“It all looks solid on my end, Miss Bennett. As soon as Xander signs it, I will get an original copy with his signature on it. Everything will be filed with the league.”

“Thank you for everything,” I whisper before hanging up.

I press the phone to my chest, wishing Xander was here so we could live this once in a lifetime moment together.

Deciding that a phone call needs to be just as good, I open my call log app to call him and give him the official news. A knock at the door distracts me, and I run to open it, hoping that it’s Xander coming back and just forgot his key card to get in. I am surprised when I come face to face with the concierge.

“Miss,” he almost bows to me in his very posh way. “I apologize for the disturbance. There’s been multiple phone calls coming in looking for you. We’ve been trying to call the room, and just wanted to make sure everything is alright since our records show you’d still be up here.”

I turn around and try to locate the phone he is talking about, rushing to the side of the couch where it is lying on the floor with the receiver off.

“I’m so sorry, it must’ve fallen off the table.”

My face gets flushed in an instant, knowing full well how that phone ended up on the floor. It had to have been when Xander was trying to have his way with me on that very couch.

“No worries, miss,” the concierge assures me. “We’re just glad you’re alright. I have a couple of messages for you.”

He lifts his hand to show me some pieces of paper right before bending down to pick up the phone and a couple of the decorative pillows littering the floor.

“I appreciate it.” I smile politely and try to act like I’m not dying of embarrassment on the inside.

As soon as the door closes behind him, I look at the messages he gave me. Confusion clouds my brain when I read one and then the other.

Abby, this is Mallory, Bran’s girlfriend. Please give me a call. That’s followed by her phone number.

The second message is similar, but this time it’s from Janie Hamilton. Xander’s little sister who I’ve never met.

I take a deep breath and shoot a text to Xander.

Me: The contract came through! Attorney reviewed it, it is good to sign. I love you so much!!

I wait for a minute, hoping he’d respond. When no text comes through, I look back at the messages I got from his sister and from Mallory. I’m not sure who to call first. In the end, I settle on Mallory since I do know her, and I feel too nervous to talk to my boyfriend’s sister for the very first time without him sitting right next to me.

“Mallory, this is Abby,” I start when she answers, but she cuts me off right away.

“Finally! Me and Janie have been trying to get a hold of you for two hours!”

Her voice sounds rushed, like we are being late for something. As far as I know, I have nothing planned with her or her best friend, who I am irrationally scared of interacting with.

“Well, here I am,” I laugh awkwardly into the phone.

“Hold on!” There’s a click in my year, followed by the sound of an incoming call. I frown when I notice it’s Mallory calling, this time with video. I answer, but she doesn’t even give me a chance to say anything.

“Didn’t you read the message Noah gave you?”

I look around in confusion, trying to remember what I did with the piece of paper Xander’s now former teammate gave me.

“I didn’t have time,” I explain to Mallory. “Someone called, and…”

She cuts me off. “Find it, girl. We’re running out of time!”

I stick my hand in my pocket and feel something with the tips of my fingers.

“Got it!” I open it up to read, squinting in the dim light. “It’s so wrinkled…”

Xander is signing his contract tonight, someone is about to call you. Make sure you get on their Facebook page.
