“What did you just say?”
I want to make sure I heard her right. What she just said is what’s been going through my head for the last couple of weeks now, but I’d convinced myself it was too soon.
Abby looks scared. “I’m sorry, Xander. I don’t know how it happened, and…”
“Well, well, well,” a voice interrupts from the side. “What do we have here?”
I recognize the voice without looking. Cole Samson.
“Fuck.”
I tap Abby on the ass and she releases her legs from around my waist. As soon as her feet touch the ground, she moves to the side, trying to put distance between us. Her breathing is out of control, and I can tell she’s close to having a panic attack.
I cross my arms over my chest and turn to face the fucker, trying to look as intimidating as I can without actually punching his lights out again.
“What can I do for you, Samson?”
He gives me his signature obnoxious smile.
“I didn’t know you were getting your dick wet with the office girl.”
The way he runs his eyes over Abby is making me see red. When he looks back at me, I realize that he’s only trying to baitme. He knows I am very close to being off the team due to my behavior, and he is doing his best to push me out.
“Ah, I didn’t know you put so much thought into my dick’s activity. Is it because yours is getting none?”
The way he smirks again is giving me the chills. Whatever beef he’s got with me goes way deeper than just the fight we had on the ice. And now he knows something no one should.
He throws his bag over his shoulder and walks around us. He stops in front of Abby, never losing the smile off his face.
“If you wanted a hockey player that bad, you should’ve picked better, little girl.”
I clench my fists, ready to jump him, but Abby is one step ahead of me.
“If you’re referring to yourself,” she raises an eyebrow, “I am not impressed.”
Cole stars laughing, but apparently, she has more to say to him.
“And if I were you, I’d be very careful as well.”
The smile drops off his face in an instant.
“Is that a threat?”
Abby shrugs.
“Not at all. But you’re not the only one who knows things.” She pauses for dramatic effect. “Am I right?”
Cole stares at her for the longest time. His jaw is tight as he grinds his teeth, eyes spitting venom at her. Without another word, he walks away.
There is no other sound from either of us as we listen to his footsteps fading down the long hallway. Finally, he reaches the door and walks out of the building.
Abby falls back against the wall, hands shaking, tears threatening to fall down her cheeks when she looks at me.
“I think I hate this job,” she whispers.
I let out a sarcastic laugh.
“Welcome to the club, babe.”
