Feeling like I have a plan in place, I click on theInterestedbutton. There is a delay in the system as I wait for confirmation that a message was sent to him. Instead, I get a rejection box.
“No!”
I sit up and slap the protein shake back on the table, bringing the laptop closer so I can read the message.
Ray Parker does not accept requests from outside the state of New York.
“Ugh!” I scream into a decorative pillow.
Why is everything so damn complicated?
FOUR
“What the fuck,”I mumble to myself as I scroll through the excessive number of emails in my inbox. They are all from theHolidatesapp.
I should’ve created an email address just for this shit instead of using my business one. Now, my work emails get lost through the requests for dates that I am being flooded with. Apparently, there are lots of women in need of a date for a random event.
A glance at the large clock on the wall shows that I’ve been sitting here and sorting through messages for the last forty-five minutes. I can’t live like this. At the risk of having to wear the pussy shirt for an entire day, I am ready to cancel the whole damn thing.
My phone ringing saves me from having to look through more. Tonight, when I get home, I’m going to figure out how to opt out from getting emails. This is bullshit.
“Park & Tow, how can I help you?” I bark into the phone.
“You can tow me,” Cal Prentice’s gravelly voice chuckles over the line.
I lean back in my chair and rest my feet on the corner of the desk. The heavy boots I’m wearing make it almost impossible for me to cross them at the ankles.
“It’ll cost you double,” I inform him. I’m not even joking.
“What?” he exclaims in disbelief. “You should charge mehalf. We’re friends.” He pauses to think. “Or I thought we were. We’re not?”
I roll my eyes at his dramatic tone. It’s like his girlfriend’s rubbed off on him.
“I’m all tied up in thisHolidatesbullshit,” I snap at him. “And it’s your fault.”
The thunderous laughter echoing in my ear makes me pull my phone away. It sounds downright obnoxious.
“How is it my fault that you got drunk off your ass and made a bet with Kyle of all people?”
He has a point there, but I do have a good excuse.
“Kyle isyourfriend,” I point out. “I have only recently joined your group of friends. I didn’t know that I’d be joining some fucked up frat house when I decided to go out with you and your people.”
“Me and my people,” he snickers. “They all like you, by the way, or they wouldn’t have given you this much shit.”
I roll my eyes again.
“Thanks, man. I feel special.”
Cal laughs again. “As you should. Seriously though, I need a tow.”
My eyebrows go up in surprise. “What did you and Evie do?” I tease him. “Crashed into another pond?”
“I wish,” he snorts. “I think the battery on the truck is dead. I’m at my office in the city. It drove fine on my way in, but now it won’t start.”
I drop my feet off the desk and turn my attention to the computer where I check the schedule.
“As luck would have it, one of my guys is out that way today,” I tell Cal. “And he has the large bed, so he’ll be able to get your truck and bring it to the shop.”
