I hate how much I love this man’s voice in addition to his looks. And he is actually very easy to have a conversation with, except for the fact that I am not the type of person he thinks I am.

“What kind of job doyouhave?” I blurt out in an effort to switch the conversation back to him.

“I’m a tow truck driver. I run my own company.”

I am left completely speechless and try not to cringe. How in the world did I end up in this situation? But then, once again, I remember how beautiful he is, and how jealous everyone would be if I showed up with him on my arm.

“That’s great, Ray.” I pray to God that I sound sincere. Nobody in my circle would be caught dead in a tow truck. I’m not even sure either one of us ever had to call a tow truck.

“Thanks, I’m doing pretty well for myself.”

I chew on my bottom lip, wondering which direction I should go with him now. Do I take the risk of getting to know him better while also knowing we could never work? Or should I cut him off now while we’re still ahead?

“Where do you live?” he asks out of nowhere.

“Oh, uh, in the city.” There’s that’s vague enough. I do live in the city, just not the city he’s thinking about.

“Good deal,” he approves. “That’s less than an hour from me. Would you like to meet over coffee?”

I slap a hand over my mouth to cover the gasp of surprise.

“It’s all good if you’re not into it,” Ray assures me. “I can honestly tell you that if you’re telling me to go pound sound, I’m quitting this app. It’s just too much.”

I uncover my mouth just enough to say something stupid. “I’d love to go out with you.”

“This is not a real date though, correct?”

I’m not sure why, but I am inexplicably annoyed by the way he asks that.

“I can pay for myself,” I snap at him. “If that’s what you’re worried about.”

“That’s not what I was thinking at all,” he assures me. “But good to know.”

I can feel the wrinkles in my forehead deepening when I frown, and I make an effort to stop doing that. I’m scared to death of needles, and fillers would not be possible.

“What were you thinking then?”

Ray chuckles, his amusement real.

“I was thinking that this is not supposed to be a real thing. We’re just meeting to discuss the logistics of this while thing for when I go to your event and you come to mine.”

“Oh.”

I leave it at that because it makes sense, and I’ve felt enough stupid for the night, I don’t need to add more.

“Also,” he continues, “you can tell me the story of how you ended up with a Massachusetts area code.”

“You have a date?”Cal’s voice sounds incredulous. “With someone off the app?”

Both he and his best friend, James, stopped by to pick up Cal’s truck. So they decided to give me the third degree here on this dating shit. I rock back and forth in my chair at work while my feet are once again resting on my desk.

“Yes and yes.”

“That’s weird,” he declares. “This app is not for dating. You’re supposed to find someone to take out to one event, not to dinners downtown.”

James turns incredulous eyes to stare at Cal.
