She turns on her heels, ready to march back to her shop. A few steps into it, she turns her head to look at me.

“Make sure you get my number from Ray. Call me, this is serious business!”

I don’t even have time to nod when she turns again, and this time, she’s really walking away. That leaves me alone with Ray.

It is unexpected that I suddenly feel nervous around him. I was perfectly fine last night when I went to meet him at the restaurant. The place would’ve never been my first choice as it was a bit run down for my taste. But I figured, what the hell, you only live once, and all that good stuff.

I definitely did not feel this nervous when I took him to my hotel suite and begged him to do things to my body.

Now, as I am standing in the middle of the sidewalk, in the smallest town I have ever been in my entire life, holding the hand of the only man I’ve ever pursued at this level, my stomach flip-flops like I am on a rollercoaster.

Ray elbows me playfully.

“Thank you for driving all the way here.”

“You’re very welcome.” I give him a polite smile. It dawns on me that I now depend on him getting me back into the city. A seriously stupid mistake on my part.

“As I was driving home,” he continues, “I realized that you could’ve just taken the Jeep back to the parking garage where I’d left it last night.”

“Why?” I frown in confusion. I’m not sure what he’s trying to say.

“You could’ve been home by now,” Ray explains. “Instead of having to wait for me here.”

Well, he makes sense. However, my brain refuses to accept common sense.

“Where would the fun in that be, Ray?” I smirk at him. “By coming here, I got a job and a place to stay.”

Ray’s laughter echoes all around us. The streets are empty, no people to watch.

“That you did,” he agrees. “You also have me,” he adds.

My mouth goes instantly dry as memories from last night come back to me. What he did to me was everything I didn’t know I wanted. I’m not sure how I’ll be able to have sex with anyone anytime soon. In fact, I find the thought of another man touching me quite nauseating.

I struggle to process what’s happening to me. I’ve been talking to Ray Parker for a few weeks, and we met in person only last night. While it was lust at first sight on my part after seeing his picture, it was not the same when we met in person.

While I still worry that we wouldn’t make a credible couple when we attend Adeline’s wedding, we are perfectly compatible in other areas.

“Let’s walk.”

He takes my hand again, leading me toward his shop that’s a few hundred feet away at what seems to be the end of the street. I look around us, taking in the buildings we pass, amazed that such a place exists in real life.

“What about your Jeep?” I ask him when I remember what the reason of me being here is.

Ray doesn’t seem very concerned with it. “I’ll come back to get it.”

I remain quiet and follow his lead since there’s no other alternative. I can’t even call for help should I need it since I never told anyone where I was. The only person who sort of knows of my whereabouts is Jeanine, but I didn’t give her enough information to count for anything.

Someone honking their horn startles me out of my inner musings.

“Ray!”

The driver has the window rolled down, and he’s hanging half out the window while driving. It looks terrifying.

“They showed you on TV earlier,” the guy yells out. “Good work, dude!”

He keeps on driving while I remain frozen on the sidewalk, looking after his car. When I turn my head to look at Ray, he doesn’t seem phased by what just happened.

“Why were you on TV?”
