“She lives with me.”

There’s a long pause where I can’t even hear him breathing. I try not to laugh, biting on my fist when the urge to do so takes over.

“What. The. Fuck.”

I’m not even sure everything that he yells at me after that. He loses his mind over it.

“Dude, what if she never wants to leave? She’ll take you to the fucking cleaners! Are you listening?” he yells when I don’t react fast enough.

“I’m listening.”

“How do you just find a girl off a weird ass app, then you bring her into your home like that? How long has she been there for?”

“A month,” I reply.

“A month!”

And he’s back to losing it.

“Do you want to end up like me?” he yells again. “I can get rid of Mona, dude. I. Can’t. Get. Rid. Of. Her.,” he enunciates. “Do you understand?”

I roll my eyes at that. There is no comparison between the two situations.

“You can’t get rid of her because you fuck her every time she offers it. Why would she leave?”

“Because she’s after my money,” he declares. “They all are. Show me a girl who’s not money hungry. You can’t,” he answers his own demands. “Because she doesn’t exist.”

I think of Hayden Benedict and everything I know of her. I could dive deeper into it, but I don’t have a reason for it. The reality is that she might have more money than me and Alex put together. That says a lot. She’s never had to worry about money, which only means that she doesn’t care whether I have any or not.

“She does exist,” I now argue to Alex.

“No fucking way,” he argues back. “If she has money, it is only because she married a rich guy, then divorced him and took half of everything he had. But she’ll always be hungry for more. And you’re next.”

“Hayden has no idea how much money I have, Alex,” I try explaining. I don’t want to share her business with him though, especially since I never even told her that I looked her up.

“They all fucking do,” Alex assures me. “They have a sixth sense when it comes to money. Trust me on this one, brother.

Well, talking to him is not helping me any. If anything, he’s making shit worse by trying to fill my head with all his insecurities.

“Get rid of her,” he insists. “As soon as possible. But not before you bring her to the party. I want my money.”

“You’re a true friend, Alex,” I snicker.

“I am,” he agrees right away. “Make sure you always call me for relationship advice. I’m here for you, man.”

We hang up, but I don’t rush back upstairs. I take a few minutes to decompress and prepare myself for when I do enter my apartment again. My feelings for Hayden have become stronger over the time we’ve spent together.

The fact that’s she is not clear with what she’s doing or why she’s staying fucks with my head. I am slowly becoming addicted to her presence.

I am scared of not seeing her beautiful face every day like I do now.

NINETEEN

“Hey,how was the trip to the city?” Evie calls out to me as soon as I walk into her shop.

Ray took me to the city yesterday where I got all my stuff and checked out of the hotel. It felt weird walking in there after a month of being away. But everything was the same as when I left. I ended up throwing away my toothbrush because it looked dry and crusty.

When we got back here, Ray brought my large and heavy bag up the stairs, mumbling all the way there about the things I could be having in it. He made me laugh with how animated about it he’d become.
