“The trip to the city and back was very entertaining,” I tell Evie. “I brought my dress for you to steam for me.”
She steps out from behind the counter, steamer in hand. It’s already been plugged in, and it is ready for usage. I take the dress out of the large bag I had it stored in, looking around for a placed where I could hang it. Once I find a hook, I turn around to see Evie’s reaction.
“Wow, this is a beautiful dress, my friend.” Her eyes widen in surprise.
I take a couple of steps back to see my dress better. I wish I’d had more options.
“You think it’s appropriate for the party?”
“Are you kidding me? You’re going to put the rest of us to shame!”
Her words worry me only because I don’t want to stand out for the wrong reasons.
“Is it too much?”
Evie, sensing my conflicting emotions, wraps an arm around my shoulders while holding the steamer with her free hand.
“The dress is perfect,” she assures me. “You will look incredible in it. All the other guys are going to be jealous of Ray, that he’s got a girl like you.”
She pauses for a second, a pensive look on her face.
“All the other guys except for Cal and James,” she informs me. “They better not have eyes other than for me and Carrie. I need to call her and give her a heads up.”
She is so cute when she talks like that, making me wish for a relationship like she has with Cal. Her best friend, Carrie, seems to be in a loving relationship as well.
I am a bit envious, realizing that I want that as well. My relationship with Chase was different. The more time passes, the more I realize there hadn’t been any feelings involved on either side. We were expected to be together, so we did what polite society asked of us and started dating.
While I was surprised to find him cheating, I’d witnessed so many instances like that one, it was almost like a rite of passage. Had it not been for my friends, I would’ve chosen to ignore his indiscretion and move on with our lives. Together.
“I’m a little worried about ruining your dress.”
Evie started on steaming my dress by now, her eyes focused on the material as she carefully runs the steamer up and down each crease.
“It feels really expensive.”
“It’s not,” I wave her worries away. I have no idea how much the dress cost, but it couldn’t have been more than a couple of thousands.
“My stepdad bought my prom dress from this brand,” she smiles at me. “I’d never felt more beautiful. It’s really good quality. I still have it. I wish I could make it work for this party now that I see you’re wearing this.”
“You can wear this dress if you want,” I say on a whim. “I can find something else for the party.”
“No way,” Evie laughs. “Besides, I’ve already tried on what I want to wear. Cal loved it. I can’t wait to see his face when I put it on again.”
She is so animated when she talks about her boyfriend, jealousy chips away at my heart a little more.
“How long have you and Cal been together for?”
“Almost a year.”
The tip of her tongue is out a little as she focuses on a patch of stubborn material.
“But we’ve known each other since I was a teenager.”
“That’s so sweet,” I smile at her. “Did you go to school together?”
She chuckles. “No. My mom married his dad.”
I didn’t see that coming.
