“Okay… What does that have to do with me?”

“She’s hoping you’ll like one of them.”

“Ah, fuck.” I push the keyboard away again.

Cal agrees. “I said the same.”

“What is it with women and their intense need to meddle?” I ask but don’t really expect for him to answer. “Is this something they’re born with? Some weird basic instinct they have where they want to constantly hook people up?”

Cal shrugs. “I think she’s just bummed about what happened with the Boston chick.”

I stick my hands in my hair and pull, wishing like hell I’d never gotten on that fucking app. Listening to these guys while Iwas drunk was a terrible idea. I knew it was bad from the second I laid eyes on Hayden in that restaurant, but I still went along with it.

Deep down, I recognize that I am as guilty as she is for the fallout. I blamed her for pretending to be someone she was not. But I also pretended that I could go through with everything without anyone getting hurt.

“I hope you know,” I look at Cal pointedly, “that I’m not coming out with you guys for a drink anytime soon.”

“Figured as much,” Cal smirks. “But you should’ve known better than let Kyle talk you into that shit, even as drunk as you were.”

I rub my hands up and down my face, refusing to look at him.

“That dare was some frat party level piece of crap. How did I fall for it?”

“That’s because you don’t go out much,” Cal explains. “You need to get out of this place more often. Learn how to socialize with other humans. Learn how to deal with Kyle.”

“Fuck Kyle.”

We both bust out laughing.

“We have to come up with something to get him,” Cal suggests. “It would make us as stupid as him, but that would be some sweet payback, don’t you agree?”

I am saved from having to answer that when my cell phone rings. Thinking it’s a work related call, I don’t even bother to look at the caller ID.

“Park & Tow, Ray speaking.”

I am met with dead air. I pull the phone from my ear to make sure we’re still connected. That’s when I notice the phone number.

Fuck, I mouth to Cal who is looking at me in question.

“Uh, hi, Ray,” a feminine voice comes over the line, and I rush to put the call on speaker. “My name is Adeline. You don’tknow me, and I understand this is confusing. But I’m friends with Hayden… Here in Boston…”

Me and Cal stare at each other.

“I’m assuming you’re not calling for a tow,” I finally say when she doesn’t continue.

“No,” she chuckles, “not at all. I’m not even sure I would know how to do that.”

These people really blow my mind with how inept they are when it comes to basic life skills.

“Pretty much the same way you just called me now,” I tell her. I might as well teach her something since she called.

“Ha, that makes sense!”

Cal rolls his eyes and shakes his head at me, looking like he’s come to the same conclusion as I did.

“The reason for my call is a bit more personal,” she explains.

“Is Hayden okay?” Because I can’t imagine any other reason why one of her friends would be calling me.
