“Do you like me a little more now?” There’s hopefulness in my voice. I sound needy and so unlike myself. But I did go through a lot to come here and meet this man. I basically had to sneak out of town without telling anyone that I was coming to New York.
Ray slows down a bit, which is helpful. My feet are killing me in my very sexy heels that he never even noticed. I wasted an amazing outfit on this man who I cannot get out of my head.
“I never said I didn’t like you. But you have to admit that we’re most likely not compatible.”
“First impressions count,” I nod in agreement. “What did you think of me when I first walked in?”
He responds with no hesitation. “That you’re way out of my league and high maintenance.”
“Ouch.”
It stings a little that he wasn’t attracted to me at least a little. After all, I literally stalked his page on theHolidatesapp, and went to great lengths to come here and meet him.
“What did you think of me?”
I debate for a second if I should lie and tell him the same. But the less I lie about at this point, the less I have to keep track of.
“I thought you looked exactly like your picture, which was a relief.”
He chuckles at that. “Yeah?”
Just then, I lose my footing and about fall to the ground. When I look down to see what’s caused this, I about cry in frustration.
“No! These are my favorite heels!”
They showcase my ankles and legs perfectly, and they cost a fortune, even by my standards.
“They’re just shoes,” Ray shrugs flippantly.
I lean against him when I hop on one heel and take the other one off. The stem literally snapped off. I wonder if they can be fixed.
“They’re notjust shoes, Ray,” I snap at him. “They cost me a lot of money. And you never even complimented me in them.”
I sound bitchy as hell, but I don’t even care at this point.
“Hey,” he presses a finger to my chin until I look at him. “I’m sorry. You mentioned being out of a job right now. It was insensitive of me to be so dismissive of this.”
I literally melt on the spot. Just when I thought I hated him and regretted ever coming to New York to meet him, he had to be all sweet again.
“Hop on.” He turns his back to me. “I’ll carry you home.”
With one shoe in hand, I think for a second. I honestly don’t want to have to walk on the streets of New York with no shoes on. It looks dirty and gross.
Before he has a chance to change his mind about it, I take my other shoe off and slide my purse across my body. He bends down at the knees allowing me to hop onto his back with very little effort.
“This is weird,” I yell into his ear, legs wrapped around his waist. “I don’t think anyone’s ever done this for me.”
Ray winks back. “I’ll be your knight in shining armor for the night. Now guide me to where you live.”
“Just stay straight for the next two blocks, then make a right.”
I try to keep my arms on his shoulders as opposed to around his neck so that I don’t strangle him to death.
“Your skin is so soft.”
He talks over his shoulder, trying to make eye contact with me. His hands are wrapped around my ankles, with his thumbs gently rubbing against my anklebones. The roughness of his pads gives me the shivers. I wonder how it’d feel if he ran his fingers like that up the length of my legs.
“I shaved my legs before coming to see you,” I confess for absolutely no reason. “And I moisturized.”
