I let out a big yawn and scratch at my head when my cell phone connected to the Bluetooth snaps me out of this Hayden induced dream.

“Ray, my man, what the hell is going on?” Cal’s voice echoes in the cabin of the truck.

“Not much. Just heading home.”

“Is, uh…” He hesitates for a second. “Is your woman with you?”

My eyebrows go up in surprise even though he can’t see me.

“Hayden? No. Why would she be?”

“Because she ran out of my shop today,” Evie now informs me. I guess she had Cal call me so she could take over. “She was crying, Ray!”

I frown at hearing that.

“Why was she crying?”

Evie sighs in the cutest way, making me smile. She really is adorable, and Cal is a lucky son of a bitch.

“She worked on this one arrangement. I told her that I had a customer who needed a whole bunch of the same. She… uh… she couldn’t deal.”

I grin as I stare through the windshield, driving home to this girl who’s been pretending to know anything about flowers. I see her every night looking things up on her phone, and I have to give her props that she’s at least trying.

“Ray…”

Evie hesitates, sounding unsure of how to proceed. I hear some shuffling on their end, and I can’t tell if they’re arguing with each other or if they got the TV going. The sound is muffled.

“Just fucking tell him, Evelyn,” Cal’s strong voice snaps at her. “How is you telling me this every night helping any? I don’t want to hear it anymore.Tell.Him.”

“I can hear you,” I inform them. They get instantly quiet, which is funny to me. “What should she tell me, dude? Is it bad?”

“It depends,” he sighs, but more in annoyance than anything.

“On what?”

“On how much you like this Hayden chick,” he explains. “And before we get to that, I just want to ask why you couldn’t find a normal human on theHolidatesapp. Why do you have to bring us problems?”

I bust out laughing. “You brought us Evie,” I point out.

“True,” Cal admits.

That’s followed by a very offended Evie. “Hey! That’s not cool!”

“I was going to bring Evie into my life no matter what,” he continues. “I love her. She’s a bit crazy, and I will never recover from the heartache she put me through…”

“I didn’t put you through anything,” Evie yells at him. “You… You… You…”

“Okay, while she’s trying to find her words,” Cal tells me, “we called to tell you that Evie wants to fire Hayden.”

“Oh my God,” she yells again. “Who told you to tell him that? I never said that!

All I said was that I don’t think she ever worked in a flower shop before!”

She punctuates each word with a clap of her hands. She’s making me laugh with how animated she is about this.

“That doesn’t mean I want to fire her!”

“Then why are you telling me about it every night?” Cal snaps at her. “Why do I have to listen about this every fucking night, Evie?”
