“Uh, no, thank you. I don’t even remember the last time I ate meat.”

His eyes widen in shock, but he doesn’t push for it. He just brings the fork to his mouth and eats the bite he offered me. He is almost done eating, and I wait patiently until then.

“They will come in the morning to pick up the plates and silverware,” I explain when he gets up to take his plate to the sink.

That stops him in his tracks.

“Oh shit, I didn’t even realize these weren’t mine. But now that you said it, yeah, I don’t have anything fancy like this.”

He still takes everything to the sink and rinses it off. He then grabs the box it all came in and places it in there.

“What are you doing?”

“Picking things up,” he explains. “We need to put your salad away so it doesn’t go bad.”

His comment suggests that I would want to eat this again. Like how people eat leftovers. That won’t happen, but I keep my mouth shut when he takes the plate and dumps the contents into a plastic container. He snaps the lid on, then puts it in the refrigerator.

“You can have it for lunch tomorrow,” he tells me. “It’ll still be good.”

Before long, he picked everything up while I sat and watched. For some reason, I feel uncomfortable about it. That’s bizarre because I have a maid at home, and I watch her at work all the time. I never gave it a second thought.

“Okay, all done.” Ray wipes the kitchen counter with a flourish, dropping the towel next to the sink.

I stand up, wishing I never dressed up for this dinner. I’ve felt so much better in the last couple of days with just the jeans and a work shirt on.

“You look beautiful,” Ray tells me. “The most beautiful girl I’ve ever had here in my humble abode.”

I wince at hearing that. The thought of all these other girls coming to his place, sitting in the chair I just vacated or sleeping in his bed just doesn’t sit well with me.

“I wanted to make it special.” I turn around to put the candle out.

“You made it very special, Hayden,” Ray assures me. “No one has ever gone to such trouble for me before.”

His words help to ease the tight fist around my heart. I’m not sure why it matters knowing that I’m the first girl who’s made a fuss about feeding him a fancy dinner, but it does.

I feel him when he comes closer, then wraps his arms around me from behind. The heat of his body turns me on. All I can think now is how happy I am to be here with him.

“I love this dress on you,” he whispers in my ear right before pressing his lips on the sensitive skin under my ear. “I can’t wait to take it off you.”

I drop my head back against his shoulder, closing my eyes, trying to enjoy every second I have left with Ray Parker. I want him to do all sorts of things to my body, repeat all the ones he’s already done to it.

I never want to forget him.

EIGHTEEN

I expectedHayden to leave as soon as she confessed all her sins to me. I felt a little guilty for not also telling her about everything I’d found online about her. She seemed distressed enough without me adding more to it, so I left it alone.

Two more weeks have passed since she waited for me with the most expensive meal I’d ever eaten. I took her to my bed as soon as we were done cleaning up the kitchen. I made love to her like it would be the last time, telling my goodbyes to everything that was Hayden Benedict.

I woke up the next morning with her body wrapped around me, hanging on for dear life. I kissed her on the forehead and got up, ready to start my day. Right before leaving, I sat on the side of the mattress and watched her sleep. She was now cuddling with my pillow, a content look on her face. Her naked body was barely covered by the sheet.

Once again thinking that was the last time I would see her like this, I pulled the covers over her to make sure she stayed warm until she was ready to go. I kissed her gently, sighed and took off.

My schedule for the day was full but all in office. I had a lot of paperwork to take care of, invoices to send out and calls to make.Every so often, I would glance out the window to see if my Jeep was still there. Every time I’d see it hadn’t moved, I’d frown in confusion.

Imagine my surprise when I finally saw movement from my apartment. Except for the fact that it wasn’t in the form of Hayden taking off in my vehicle. Instead, it was her, dressed in her jeans, a new looking top and her permanent high-heeled shoes on her feet, walking out of the courtyard.

I got up and ran outside, ready to call her name. But then, I noticed her crossing the street and walking until she got to Evie’s flower shop. She paused in front of it for a minute before going right in.
