She smiles politely, but it doesn’t reach her eyes. “Apology accepted.”
We are all taken aback by the way she says it, with a subtle tilt of her head, looking almost regal. Alex manages to recover enough to continue.
“I hear you’re from Boston.”
“I am,” she confirms to him.
With my fingers interlaced over my stomach, I put my head back and smile. She looks so beautiful as she sits there demurely, pure elegance emanating from every pore on her body.
“I know a few people in Boston,” Alex informs her.
The tone of his voice suggests that she wouldn’t know them because they’re in higher circles. I can’t wait to see how this is going to play out.
“That’s wonderful.” She gives him a polite smile but doesn’t take it any further than that.
Alex gets annoyed that she’s not taking the bait.
“I’m sure you wouldn’t know them, though. They’re pretty high up the ladder.”
Still nothing from her except for a still polite, albeit more strained of a smile. Alex is like a dog with a bone.
“James actually works for a company that’s based out there. He is a financial investor.”
“Very impressive,” Hayden agrees, but she doesn’t sound as impressed as Alex wants her to be.
“I have some of my money with them as well,” he continues. “The owner of the company takes care of my account. Personally.”
“Wow, good for you.”
At this point, she just looks bored with the conversation. She focuses on a spot on her dress, trying to get a stubborn piece of lint off it.
“His name is Jonathan Bennett.”
That grabs her attention. Her eyes fly into Alex’s direction, a big smile in place.
“I know Jon.”
Alex looks perplexed. “You do?”
“Yes,” Hayden nods. “In fact, I went to school with his sister. Abigail is her name. We weren’t close friends or anything, just acquaintances, but I do know her.”
With abrupt moves, Alex grabs his cell phone, unlocks it, then takes a moment to look something up, leaving the rest of us to just stare at him. Once he found what he was looking for, he scootches to the edge of his seat, showing Hayden the screen of his phone with his arm stretched over me.
“You actually know this girl?” he asks.
She leans forward, and my eyes are distracted by the cleavage showing. The polka dotted dress she’s wearing does some pretty amazing things to her breasts, and I can’t look away.
“Abigail, yes,” she confirms to Alex, who now just looks annoyed.
“That’s some crazy ass coincidence,” he tells me. “But anyone has access to the internet nowadays, and this is a simple search.”
He’s implying that Hayden is lying about her knowing this Abigail chick, and that she only knows her because she looked her up.
“Jon also has a brother,” Hayden continues. “His name’s Brandon. He was older than me and Abigail, I’ve only seen him once or twice. I’m not sure whatever came of him. He is never around.”
Alex’s eyeballs are about to fall out of his head.
“He plays hockey now,” he informs her.
