“Evelyn thinks I’m a stud?” I grin at my own reflection as I stare out the window.
“Yeah.” Alex doesn’t sound very excited about it. “Don’t tell Cal I told you, though. He’s just too much when it comes to that girl. It’s like a damn obsession, I swear.”
“Dude,” I interrupt him. “You keep on trying to stay away from a serious relationship. Just watch how that’s gonna bite you in the ass one day.”
“What?” He sounds perplexed. “How?”
“It’s all fun and games until you fall in love,” I warn him. “Considering how easy it’s been for you to discard Mona, I’m gonna take a wild guess and say you never loved her. Why in the hell you even hooked up with her again is beyond me.”
“She’s the one who came on to me,” he almost yells in protest. “I had no plans to reach out to her again. I made it clear that I am not into what she’s looking for in life.”
“Yeah, well…” I drag out that last word. “You keep on going back to her, she’ll end up pregnant one day. Accidentally on purpose,” I joke. “That’ll teach you.”
“Shut the fuck up!”
I can tell that he is in full freak out mode now, so I decide to cut him some slack.
“Okay, let’s get back to my situation.” I bring us back on track. “What am I supposed to do again? Find a hot girl on this app, then bring her over to meet everyone?”
“Yes,” Alex approves of my plans. “And don’t embarrass me there, dude,” he insists. “Make sure she is hot, or you’ll never heard the end of it from Kyle. It was his idea, after all.”
I walk over to my laptop, where I scroll through my calendar.
“Can you throw a Cinco de Mayo party?” I ask him.
“Why would I do that?” he snorts. “I don’t throw parties, I just attend them.”
“The app is for a holiday date,” I remind him. “I supposedly need a date for a holiday, right?”
“Not necessarily,” he argues. “It could be for any event, no?”
I type in the name of the app and find that they also have a website. The more I scroll through it, the more obvious it is that their marketing is genius.
“Why would they call itHolidatesthen?” I ask Alex.
“Ah, good point,” he agrees. “To be honest with you, I don’t give a fuck what you bring this girl to. Just find her first, then we can worry about a holiday get together.”
I try to remember if there’s a deadline to the dare from Kyle.
“Do I even have to rush this?” I ask out loud. “I mean, a Christmas date sounds more doable.”
Alex snickers. “That would not work for multiple reasons.”
“You don’t say,” I mumble right before bringing the coffee mug back to my lips. “Please enlighten me.”
“For one, who brings a stranger to Christmas? That’d be fuckin’ weird, don’t you think?”
“Why is it weird?” I shrug, even though he can’t see me. “If that’s the event you need to bring a significant other to, that’s what you do.”
“Well, I think that’s weird,” he huffs. “I don’t want to open my presents from Santa with a stranger looking on.”
I roll my eyes and decide to drop it. He is too wound up about this, like he is really in need of a companion for the Christmas holidays. I’ll laugh my ass off if he ever ends up in that situation.
“What was the other reason I couldn’t wait till Christmas?” I bring us back on track.
“Oh, that.” He clicks his tongue. “You only have thirty days to come up with something.”
“Thirty days?” My eyebrows go up in surprise. “What happens if I don’t?”
