I lean forward, my chest close to the flat surface of the table.
“I didn’t do any of what they’re accusing me of doing.”
“Yeah, I know.” He speaks in a laconic way, sounding almost obnoxious with it. “But the reality is that you are in here, and now we have to get you out.”
“I get that,” I manage through say through clenched teeth and tight jaw.
“Before we get right down to business,” he chuckles at my discomfort, “I have to say that I am very impressed with who you ended up getting in trouble over. Hayden Benedict runs in very high circles.”
Cal’s eyes widen in surprise at hearing that.
“She has enough money to buy this whole town three times over.”
Cal’s jaw drops.
“So it is understandable why her friends would think she was kidnapped from Boston and brought here under duress.”
“She’s a rich girl?” Cal’s tone of voice is shocked. “Alex said she was after your money.”
The attorney rolls his eyes and busts out laughing.
“Alex is a drama queen,” he informs us. “Always has been. And that girl he can’t get rid of messed up his head. Now he thinks everyone is after money.”
Suddenly, he doesn’t look amused anymore when he stares right at me.
“I can assure you that your millions are a drop in the bucket for the likes of Hayden Benedict. She is also very well connected. And those connections worked really hard to throw you in jail. You are currently being held without bail. They have you scheduled to show up in front of a judge next week on Thursday.”
Any energy I had left in my body completely leaves me. I lean back against the hard chair, feeling dejected.
“In the hours you’ve been held here, the S.W.A.T. team swarmed your shop.”
“Fuck,” I whisper. This could be beyond damaging to my business. We might never recover. What’s going to happen to all my guys? The office staff? All the contracts we have all over?
“They were there to save her,” Dillon explains. “Fortunately for you, she is actually a pretty nice person. She rejected all claims of kidnapping or aggravated assault.”
Now I feel like I’m starting to get a bit of life in my body.
“They interrogated her for as many hours as you’ve been in here,” he continues. “I’m sure she’ll tell you all about it when you see her. But, long story short, the investigators decided the charges against you are without merit.”
My eyes fly to Cal’s. The relief on his face mirrors my own.
“However…”
“Ah, fuck,” Cal mutters. “That’s not good.”
“A judge needs to sign off on this.”
Cal perks up. “Well, if the investigators said he’s free and clear, why wouldn’t the judge sign off on it? It’s pretty logical to me.”
“All county judges are away to Las Vegas. For a conference,” he clarifies. “There’s no one here to sign off on your charges being lifted.”
“What. The. Fuck.”
TWENTY-THREE
I amwilling to give my entire trust fund away to have Ray released from jail.
As soon as we walk into the courthouse which is attached to the county jail, we come face to face with James Walker, Carrie’s boyfriend. He informs me that Ray already has an attorney in with him.
