I’m only joking, but I about fall off my chair when Adeline runs with it.
“That is a wonderful idea, Ray. I appreciate your support in this. Evie’s boyfriend will fill the second spot. My seating chart is perfect once again.”
Me and Cal stare at each other with our mouths open in shock. You could knock us over with a feather right now.
“I am so happy that we talked, Ray. It’s been wonderful,” Adeline gushes. “I will text you all the details to this number. I expect to see you in a tux, same for Evie’s boyfriend. She willneed to wear proper attire as well. If you send me everyone’s sizes, I will have the shop here have everything ready for you.”
“Wait a minute,” I try to interrupt her, but she’s not listening.
“Good, that’s settled. I am looking forward to meeting you all. Goodbye.”
It all happens so fast, I am left in disbelief when I realize she actually did hang up. I look at Cal, expecting to see him in shock as well, but no.
“Dude, the rich girl thinks my girl is cool,” he grins at me.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I explode. “Did we not listen to the same conversation?”
“We did.”
I flail my arms about. “And?”
Cal just shrugs. “And I need to walk over and tell Evie to cancel the party for this weekend. We’re going to Boston, baby!”
TWENTY-SEVEN
Today isAdeline’s wedding day. She is a nervous mess, but a happy mess at that.
“I am so happy, I think I’m going to burst!”
I try to smile, but I worry that my face just turns into a grimace. My heart is pounding in my chest and my hands feel sweaty. There is not enough oxygen in the room where Adeline is getting ready for the ceremony, and I might just have a slight panic attack.
“You look beautiful.” She steps in front of me and grabs my hands.
I give her another forced smile. I don’t feel beautiful. I lost a lot of weight in the last three weeks due to me just staying hauled up in my bedroom and sleeping. The dress I’m wearing was a bit more fitted when I got it, now it hangs on me. Luckily, the design of it is very forgiving, and it still looks decent.
“I am very honored to have you as my maid of honor,” Adeline continues. “You are going to look amazing walking down the aisle.
“Thank you.” My voice is barely a whisper when I speak.
“I had a couple of last-minute changes.”
My ears perk up at that. Adeline always has everything planned to the very last second, and she hates any changes she might have to make at the last minute.
“What type of changes?”
She smiles, and I can’t help but admire how perfect she looks. She is the most beautiful bride. I have a hard time ever picturing myself in this role.
“I decided not to pair you with anyone,” she explains. “You will be walking down the aisle by yourself.”
That is actually a relief. I don’t want to have to deal with anyone today.
“I can handle that,” I assure her.
She looks around, noticing how everyone is busy doing other things, then pulls me to the side.
“I dropped Emma and Jeanine as my bridesmaids.”
My mouth opens in shock. I look around and only now realize that our two other friends are not here. Well, they’re not my friends anymore, but I never expected Adeline to cut them off.
