“Is there anything else you need to know about me?” She breaks the spell when she asks.
After seeing the picture of her that I texted him, my friend, Alex, declared that Zara must be a sociopath. He couldn’t tell me why, but that’s just the vibe she gave off to him.
The main problem I see with that is that I am super attracted to her, despite the fact that I can definitely tell she’s a little crazy. This whole talk about people getting married and subsequently divorced kinda scared me a little. But shit, if she offered to come home with me tonight, there would be no hesitation on my part when I said yes.
This is complicated already, and we still have to see each other two more times.
Two. More. Times.
NINE
Zara
Tonight has beenthe most unexpected experience of my life. Dinner with Kyle is fun, and that confuses me.
Maybe my lack of experience when it comes to the opposite sex is showing. But I was never interested in developing my social skills in this area. I am happy alone and being responsible only for myself.
The way Kyle smiles at me is throwing all that out the window. I shared with him tonight more than I ever have with anyone else, including my mother and my brother. I have no idea what came over me when I spilled all that out. I could tell from his face that he was surprised by it as well. He didn’t know how to respond, and that’s when I feared that I crossed a line. I thought he’d stand up and walk out of here, trying to put as much distance between us as possible.
Instead, he is still sitting across from me as we discuss the logistics for the two events. He is so laid back though, I get antsy.I want to make sure he doesn’t forget any of the details, but he doesn’t inspire much confidence to be honest.
“I need to go,” I tell him when a quick glance at my phone reveals that we’ve been talking for an hour and a half. I don’t even remember eating.
Without waiting for him to respond, I signal for the waitress to bring us the bill.
“Hey, why the rush?” Kyle teases. “You got somewhere to be?”
“Yes, in bed,” I reply without thinking.
The grin on Kyle’s face implies that I’d be doing a lot more in bed than just plain sleeping. I blush to the roots of my hair, unaccustomed for anyone to flirt with me in such an obvious manner.
“It’s late,” I snap at him. “And I have to go to work tomorrow.”
“Ah,” he rolls his eyes playfully. “Work again. I bet you do a lot of that.”
My eyebrows raise in surprise because I don’t understand how anyone can be so flippant about their work of employment.
“Do you not have a job?”
I sound a bit high and mighty when I ask, but I need to understand the dynamics here. Then again, it’s not like I’ll be seeing this man past the two dates out of necessity that we have planned.
“I have a job,” Kyle grins at me. “Not as glamorous as yours…”
“What exactly is this job?” I interrupt him.
He shrugs, smile still firmly on his face. “Video games.”
The disgust must be obvious on my face no matter how hard I force myself not to judge. After all, it is none of my business what he wants to do with his life. But what kind of grown man plays video games for a living?
“Is this together or separate?” The waitress suddenly pops out of nowhere, making me jump.
“Separate,” I say.
“Together,” Kyle says at the same time. “I got this.”
Knowing now what I know about him, I can’t let him pay for my meal, not with a clear conscience.
“No, it’s on me!”
