He presses my hand harder against his erection while his eyes widen, looking impossibly big through the lenses of his glasses. Or maybe everything is amplified in my head.
“Only if you want to,” he responds.
The ball is in my court. The only problem is that I don’t know how to play.
EIGHTEEN
Kyle
There’sthis huge knot in the back of my throat. It refuses to dislodge even after I repeatedly clear my voice. Not matter how hard I try to stay cool, on the inside, I am very nervous about what I’m doing with Zara. Or not doing. I have no idea what’s going on.
“I would like to come in and eat.”
Her voice is so soft when she speaks, on top of me panicking that I can’t clear my throat, that I almost miss her saying anything.
“Of course!”
I jump out of the truck before rushing to her side. With one hand on the handle of the door, I take a deep breath in and open it with a flourish. Zara doesn’t meet my eyes, but she does allow me to help her down.
She takes a moment to look around as she takes in the small front yard and non descriptive porch. I’ve never cared aboutwhere I lived as long as the roof over my head was solid, it had running water and indoor plumbing. Now, as I watch Zara taking it all in, I try to look at things from her perspective, wondering what she sees.
“Do you rent this?” she finally asks.
That’s the last thing I thought she’d ask. “Uh, no.” I run a hand through my hair. “It’s mine. I own it,” I add like I’m not repeating myself with each sentence.
“Wow. That’s… Good for you!” She turns wide eyes my way.
“I’m not a total bum, I swear.”
I’m only teasing her, but she takes it to heart. Her eyes fill with worry.
“I am so sorry if I gave you the impression that I thought badly of you. I just…”
She takes a couple of deep breaths in, seemingly at a loss for words.
“I tend to judge people,” she confesses.
I can’t deal with how adorable she looks when she says that. She is equal parts defiant and embarrassed by the fact.
“I gathered as much.”
Trying really hard not to laugh, I grab her by the hand and pull her with me as I walk toward my front door. Unlocking the door, I make sure to turn the lights on before stepping in and bringing her with me. Once the door is closed, I open my arms wide while still holding on to her hand.
“Welcome toChâteaux Kyle. Living room here…”
I point toward the area in question, which is obvious since we’re basically standing in it.
“Kitchen is over there,” I continue. “A bathroom at the end of the hallway, two bedrooms on the right, some closet space on the left.”
Zara takes everything in, her eyes scanning the space, looking like she is paying attention to every single detail.
“This is really nice, Kyle.” She gives me a tentative smile. “And clean,” she adds.
I shrug at that. “I have a cleaning lady.”
She stares at me like she’s trying to figure out if I am serious or not. But then, she glances away nervously. Her fingers flex against mine a couple of times, making me wonder if she wants me to let go of her.
“I’m a little nervous.” She attempts to laugh, but the comes out hollow. “I don’t know what I was thinking when I agreed to come here with you.”
