“But you wanted us to be here. I don’t want to ruin the evening,” she commented, her voice breaking with emotion.

“Ruin? How could you ruin anything? You only make everything more wonderful. Let’s go.”

As soon as we crossed the threshold, I took her straight to the bedroom. I needed her desperately. I wanted to strip away all her clothes so we could be skin to skin. When I had her there, in front of me, I looked at her intensely, with that immense love and desire I felt for her. My eyes didn’t leave hers; it was as if they burned with desire. I held her face and caressed her cheek. My heart began to beat forcefully, and my excitement grew with each second.

“I love you, my sweet doctor.”

“Not as much as I love you,” she affirmed, and my heart skipped a beat, a somersault of happiness.

“Well, I don’t think it’s possible to love more than I love you,” I said, and did what I needed to do—I took her lips and claimed her mouth as mine.

In seconds, the kiss became desperate. I licked her lips, nibbled them, plundered her mouth. My body pressed against hers, and I could feel her accelerated breathing, her excitement, which intensified my own. Everything transformed into pleasure and passion. A moan escaped my mouth, and Devon sighed and gasped against my lips. While kissing her, my hands caressed her back, seeking the delicious curve of her backside to caress it and pull her toward me. When I realized that if I continued, I wouldn’t be able to stop, I pulled away slightly and rested my forehead against hers. Before undressing her, I wanted to give her something I had for her.

“I want to give you a gift. I was going to give it to you on Christmas, but I have something else planned for that day. Now I’d like you to wear it and have nothing else on but that—just your skin and what I’m going to give you,” I said, imagining her naked and wearing only the necklace I had bought her.

I went to get the gift and gave it to her, but I was surprised that instead of happiness, her face looked shadowed. The first thought that crossed my mind was that perhaps she felt bad for not having anything to give me, because I couldn’t find any other explanation.

“Open it,” I asked.

She did as I asked and took the case from the bag, then unwrapped it quickly. When she saw the necklace, she froze, saying nothing—I don’t think she even blinked.

“I hope you like this necklace. Let me put it on you.”

I took it out of the case and showed it to her so she would turn around and I could put it on her. I noticed her eyes misted over, and at first I thought it was from emotion, but I quickly realized that what was reflected on her face wasn’t joy.

“What’s wrong? Don’t you like it? If that’s the case, we can exchange it,” I said, though I didn’t understand her reaction.

“Why did you buy me this necklace?” she asked, almost in a whisper, and she seemed terrified or disappointed—I couldn’t decipher it, and I began to worry.

“Because I thought you would like it. I never expected this reaction,” I explained, putting everything back in the bag and leaving it on the nightstand.

“Sweetheart,” what’s wrong? Why are you acting like this? I don’t understand anything,” I said, taking her face in my hands.

“Why did you buy me that necklace?” she asked again, and I understood less and less about the situation I was experiencing.

“I don’t know, I liked it and thought you would like it too. Now tell me once and for all what’s happening.”

She moved away from me and sat on the edge of the bed. I saw her pressing her head with her hands and sighing. Then she looked at me with determination.

“Do you buy that necklace for all your lovers?” she asked, leaving me completely stunned.

“What? Why are you asking me that?” I asked gravely, because I couldn’t understand how such a ridiculous idea had occurred to her.

“Just answer me, but tell me the truth,” she asked.

“Of course not. How could you think such nonsense?!” I exclaimed, indignant and surprised.

I couldn’t believe that the beautiful moment we were having had gone to hell just because Devon thought that the gift I hadbought as a token of my love was something I gave to all my lovers. How could she think that?

“Today Lino came by the medical clinic and…”

Just hearing her ex’s name made my blood boil.

“Your ex-husband? You were with him?” I asked, pissed off, because imagining her with that guy bothered me tremendously.

“He showed up when I left the clinic to talk to me about you. I didn’t believe anything he said, but this gift you’re giving me makes me doubt.”

“Doubt me? I don’t know what he might have told you, but it’s clear that I don’t like that son of a bitch’s word still having value to you,” I stated, furious, because it was clear that that son of a bitch had gone to fill her head with lies against me, but what both angered and hurt me equally was that she believed him.
