He tosses the Lay’s my way and turns to Barbra.

“Roast beef or turkey?”

“Neither.”

“I’ll take it!” Sam says, hands out.

They better not cross any lines with her. I’ll be pissed.

I try to guide the conversation.

“That was one of the best game nights we’ve ever had.”

The testosterone club ignores me and stays on focus. The interrogation moves to the second suspect.

“When are you leaving?”

“In three weeks. It’s getting close. I’m excited.”

I am not.

“Where exactly are you going?”

“France first. But Italy is really what I want to explore. I’ve always seen myself in that kind of life.”

“That’s cool.”

But it isn’t. Not to them, because their matchmaker bubble burst. Not to me.

“I think after my lease runs out in Paris; I’ll be spending lots of time there. I have a couple of rentals I’m looking at online.”

Teddy jumps in with the million-dollar question. “But how long are you planning on staying? You’re coming back, right?”

“Who knows.”

What? Is she considering something permanent?

“Really?” I say.

“If something is meant for your life, it happens. I think that’s true about people and about places.”

The boys are unusually quiet. I feel that way too.

“Aargon Lyon?”

The nurse’s voice stops the conversation.

“Right here!”

Teddy

Dad disappears into the back rooms, and Sam and I resume the mission.

“So, you’re really gonnastaythere?”

“Maybe.”
