Sometimes I do too.

CHAPTER 28

Barbra

“What are you wearing?”

“Wait. I need to change lanes and this fool isn’t letting me in!”

I give a friendly wave while thinking of flipping him off.

“Thank you,” I mouth to the stranger.

“Okay. I have that dress I showed you I got on Shein.”

“The cream colored one with the little leaves?”

“Yeah.”

“Oh, you look good in that. What shoes?”

“Camel colored platforms. And I wore the bracelets he gave me last year. You know the gold bangles?”

“I love those. What are you going to be doing? Has he told you yet?”

“No! It’s all very secretive.”

I make the final turn onto the cul-de-sac of custom-built homes.

“All I know is that we’re going for lunch somewhere he’s excited about. Then he said we’re going to one of my favorite places.”

“Bed?”

“No! I cannot, under penalty of the law I’m just now passing through Congress, have sex with him tonight. Or any time before I leave.”

“It’s a federal law then?”

“Yep!”

“Better tell yourself that again. The temptation is about to get a lot tougher.”

“I know. Okay. I’m here. What the heck?”

I slow my approach and see the first signs of something fun.

“What?”

“There’s a tent on the front patio…Think it’s Dove’s… And there’s a kid’s weird miniature plane, parked in the driveway! Next to a life-sized cutout of Beyoncé waving! Oh my God, he’s hysterical!”

“What does that all mean? You better call me as soon as you get home. I’m going to be driving myself crazy, trying to figure the puzzle out.”

“I’m spending the night. Forgot to tell you that part.”

“Oh my God! You fantastic whore!”

“It’s not like that. Got to go. Bye!”

I disconnect.
