He set his coffee mug down so hard on the table, some of the contents spilled over the side.

“So do you miss him?”

I could tell the idea bothered him, although I didn’t know why. Still, I decided to play nice.

“I haven’t spoken to him in more than five years. I’ve been over him for a long time.”

“Good.”

So, Jade had been dreaming about her asshole ex last night while she lay in bed next to me stroking my dick.

That pissed me off probably more than it should.

One thing was certain, that fucker better not come to Haven Springs or I just might throw him in jail for real.

“What about you? Do you miss Sylvia?”

The sound of my ex’s name made me stop buttering my toast and look over at Jade with a frown.

“How do you know about Sylvia?”

“It’s a small town, Bri. Everyone knows you two dated.”

I resumed tending to my toast and murmured, “I thought I was going to marry her.”

I surprised myself by confessing that.

“Really? What happened? If you don’t mind me asking.”

With a lift of my shoulders, I replied, “She thought Chris Day was a better bet.”

Jade wrinkled her nose as she took a bite of her English muffin. “Ouch. I’m sorry.”

“What’s the cliché? It is what it is. I suppose she did me a favor. I would have never been enough for her.”

“If it’s any consolation, I’ve seen them around town. They don’t look happy.”

“That’s what I’ve heard.”

And yeah, it did give me a little consolation.

But what I really wanted was to know about this Garrett dude. I just couldn’t figure out how to ask.

Chapter Twenty-Seven

Jade

Check out took a few minutes longer than normal, since Brian had to get his five hundred dollars back, but we were on our way sooner than our targeted nine o’clock time.

Between “the incident” last night, and talking about our exes at breakfast, things were awkwardly quiet once we got in the truck.

I tried to fill the silence by saying, “I think we should wait to get gas until we get back on the highway. I’ll probably have to pee in about an hour, anyway.”

“Sounds like a plan,” he replied dismissively without looking up from his phone.
