“I didn’t either,” I whispered.
He set the bottle on the dryer and took a tentative step closer.
“No? You seemed like you were happy to get away from me when you got out of the car.”
“You seemed happy to be dropping me off.”
I felt his hand on my hip as he finished closing the distance between us.
“I was the farthest thing from happy. I hobbled my busted ass across town to tell you howunhappy I was in person.”
“You could have just sent a text, you know.”
His hold on my hip tightened, and he shook his head. “No. I needed to see you.”

She let out a little whimper as her arms came around my neck. Her kiss tasted familiar, and it felt like I could breathe again.
I pulled away and dropped my forehead to hers, eyes closed, with a sigh.
“Fuck, Sunshine. I was so worried you weren’t going to let me in.”

“Even if I didn’t want to keep dating you, I’d have let you in.”
I pulled back to look at her face. “But you do want to keep dating me, right?”
She gave me a small smile. “Yeah. I do.”
“Does that mean I can come in past the laundry room?”
Her sweet smile turned devilish as she reached for my hand. “Absolutely.” She nodded toward the bottle of pain reliever still on the dryer. “Grab the ibuprofen. I don’t want you in pain when I take you to bed.”
I dutifully picked up the small bottle with a “Yes, ma’am,” secretly relieved, because my leg was fucking killing me. It’d been a longer walk than I’d realized.

By the time we made it to my bedroom, I finally caught the hitch in his step. He tried to hide it, but every few paces his left leg stiffened just enough to give him away.
“Brian,” I said quietly as we stepped further inside the room.
He looked at me with a half-smile already forming. “Yeah?”
“Just hold me tonight, okay?”
