“I give you my word that no harm will come to the man under my care.”
The man swallowed hard and backed slowly out of the room. He looked like it was the hardest thing he’d ever had to do, and my opinion of him increased drastically. If he was able to come down from the boiling rage he’d been radiating, I felt it was possible that he wasn’t as dangerous as he’d seemed.
Scratch that. He was obviously as dangerous as he seemed, but maybe he wasn’t an uncontrollable killing machine. Maybe the human bunnywashis and he was only being protective.
Then Angry Tiny Guy would take him away from me.
And I wouldn’t have a human bunny anymore.
I scowled.
Once the tension had dropped and things stopped being exciting, the dogs went back to the kennel, and the cats went back to doing cat things.
It was good to have friends that had your back.
Trixiewuffednext to me and nosed at my hip. Then she cocked her head in question.
“I don’t like it either, but if he’s the bunny’s brother, we have to hear him out,” I admitted.
“If your person makes you think of a bunny, then he’s probably my brother, Vix. How did you get him?” Angry Tiny Guy said as he reentered the room, minus his knives.
“He fell asleep on me.” My bunny’s name was Vix? Fuck, that was adorable. If he got any cuter, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to let him leave even if this guy was his brother.
“That’s definitely Vix. I want to see him. Now.” At my raised eyebrow, he bit out the word, “Please.”
A little bit of politeness goes a long way with me.
Since he knew how to play nice, I stepped aside so he could get a glimpse of my human bunny.
The man sighed in relief, and it was like he shrank down several inches as the fear and anger left him. “Why did you put him in a dog bed?”
“It seemed like a better choice than a cold, concrete floor. I mean, thereisa bed in the apartment upstairs, but I didn’t put Vix there because I thought waking up to a room full of cats and baby bunnies would be less scary than waking up in a stranger’s bed.”
“I would have killed you immediately if you had.”
“You would have tried,” I corrected calmly.
“I’m going to go over to him now,” the man said, tension creeping back into his posture.
“As long as you don’t pose a threat to him.”
“Never.”
I nodded and stepped back to allow him to pass.
The man kneeled down and touched my bunny’s face softly. It made my stomach clench, but I didn’t have the right to stop him. I’d done it earlier myself, and I didn’t even know Vix.
“I tried to wake him up, but he didn’t respond.”
“No, he wouldn’t have.” The man tugged down Vix’s blanket and began to run his hands over the sleeping man’s arms. That was when I broke.
“Don’t.”
The man’s head cocked in my direction, and his eyes narrowed.
“I don’t have proof that you know him. I’m not going to let you feel him up in his sleep.” Watching him do it was also causing my blood pressure to rise, but that wasn’t any of his business.
“Look at me. We are clearly brothers.” The man pointed at his face and then Vix’s.
