“I go to bed pretty early,” I said. I was confident about that. “I get tired with the pregnancy and all.” I put my hands over my belly, feeling the baby kick as I spoke. “I must have eaten dinner; I'm always hungry.”

“I think we had Bella’s?” Traviel said.

“Did you go there or did you take out?” Sheriff Vale asked.

“I don't know,” Traviel murmured.

“Neither do I.”

“Before dinner, then?”

Nothing. I had no memory of that. I swallowed hard and shook my head.

“What's thelastthing you remember?” Rosemary asked. “Beforewaking up this morning.”

“We went for a walk in the woods,” I said. “By the lake.”

“Yeah,” Traviel said. “We did.”

“Good. What did you see there?”

We both hesitated.

“There's a gazebo by the lake,” I said slowly. “I know that.”

Rosemary drummed her fingertips together. “How far is the lake from your house? How do you get there?”

Silence. “I didn't know,” I breathed. “I remember just… being at the lake. And then being here.”

“Fascinating,” Rosemary said softly. “Truly fascinating.”

“You started this town,” I said to her. “Don't you have any idea what’s happening to us?”

“No.” She shook her head. “It's a mystery. But it is one I promise we will solve.” She took my hand and patted it. “If we cannot figure out what brings the two of you here, I promise you, we will not drive you away. I want you to consider Vale Valley your home.”

“Thank you,” I choked.

“Yes,” Traviel said. “Thank you. I really—”

He vanished.

Justvanished.

One moment he was there, reaching for Rosemary's hand. And the next he was gone. For a moment, no one spoke. No one even moved. We just all stood there, blinking.

“Traviel?” I finally managed to say. Nothing. “T-Traviel?” I called, louder. My voice was trembling. There was no sign of him at all. How was this possible?

“Does he…do that? Sometimes?” the sheriff said skeptically.

I shook my head in horror. “No. No, he's never… What's happening?!”

Travis

I lay awake in bed, eyes wide. What an amazing dream. Simply incredible. For a moment I couldn't even bring myself to move. Then, I flew into action. I rushed to my laptop, tapping my fingers impatiently on the table as I waited for it to turn on. Somehow, being hit by a bus seemed to have only made it faster. It was on in a flash. I quickly opened a new document and began frantically typing everything I could remember from my dream.
