“Yeah… I’m surprised to see you too…” I forced a laugh. He called me Traviel! He said Vale Valley! That wasn’t possible. Was I dreaming somehow? I shifted the shopping basket to my other hand, pinching myself on the forearm as I did. It hurt. But it didn't seem to snap me awake.

“Well,” he said with a chuckle. “You know me. Life hands me a ticket and I take the ride. Is Elarian with you? Has he had the baby yet?”

Now I just gaped at him. He wasn'tjustcalling me Traviel. He knew about Elarian. He knew Elarian was expecting! This didn't make any sense. Before I could recover, Falkanar narrowed his eyes at me. And I could swear his gaze darted to my ears.

“Oh, shit.” He backed away a couple of steps. “Sorry, I uh, thought you were someone else. Sorry.” He beat a hasty retreat, leaving me standing there, staring after him like an idiot. How was this happening? How could hepossiblyhave known the names of the characters in my book? How could he havelookedlike someone from my dream?

By the time I recovered and ran down the aisle after him, he was nowhere to be seen. Hardly a surprise. Wandering elves were good at going unnoti – No! He wasnota freaking elf, wandering or otherwise.

I almost walked right out of the grocery store with my half-filled basket. I recovered my wits long enough to collect the last few things on my list and actually pay for them. But, I walked home in a daze.

After putting the groceries away, I sat down on my couch and pulled up the notes I had taken about characters from my dreams.

Falkanar – Wandering elf – medium-length brown hair, blue eyes, slight elf point at tips of ears

Stayed for ~ 2 weeks with Traviel and Elarian. Wandering elves never settle down until they meet their mates. Can move quickly and quietly, great for sneaking around as they travel

I read it three times. It all fit. Perfectly. Perfectly impossible.

Rory was puttering around, getting ready to leave, and shot me a few curious glances before finally saying, “Is everything all right, Travis?”

“Yeah,” I said slowly. “I just had a really… weird experience is all.”

He tilted his head curiously at me. “What do you mean by that?”

“It's really stupid,” I said with a shrug. “Don't worry about it.”

Rory looked at me skeptically. “You know, I'm here if you need to talk. You look pretty freaked out by it.”

“No, I'm not. I'm fine.”

“You put your ice cream in the cupboard.” Before I could jump to my feet, he waved me off. “Relax. I put it away for you.”

“Thanks.”

Rory nodded. “So, what's up?”

“Well, I ran into someone at the store...” I said.

“Ex?”

“No… a character from my book.”

He arched an eyebrow at me. “What?”

“So, you know those dreams I told you about? The really vivid ones I've been having about my some of my characters?” He nodded. “Well, I know it's impossible, but I swear, this guy lookedjustlike one of those characters. Identical. I mean.” I chuckled nervously. “He could have stepped right out of the pages.” I didn't add that he thoughtIwas the main character in my books and somehow magically knew their names. It sounded crazy enough to say I had seen a fictional person walking around.

Rory crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the door frame. “That is a little weird. Kinda cool, though.”

“I guess,” I said. “I'm just I'm just kind of freaked out because… I mean, he looksexactlylike the guy in my dreams.”

“Maybe he is the guy of your dreams,” Rory said suggestively.

I laughed. “Not what I meant.”

He chuckled. “Well, the way I see it, there are two possible explanations. One, is that you've seen him at the grocery store before, and subconsciously put him into your dreams.”

That was actually a really reasonable explanation. Although, I wasn't sure if I was disappointed or glad to hear it. “Yeah,” I said slowly. Of course, that didn’t explain how he knew my characters’ names or about Vale Valley.
