The nurse returned at that moment. “I’m sure you are!” The elves looked at her blankly as she beamed at them. “Congratulations, you’re pregnant!”
“What?” they cried.
“Are you sure?” Elarian asked.
She held up a piece of paper. “Positive. Literally; this is your blood test results. It’s positive for hCG. Your levels are quite low, so I don’t think you’re very far along.” She started writing on a notecard. “I’m going to refer you to our paternity doctors… they’re just across campus, in building…” She trailed off, writing directions. “Here you go. Good luck.”
Traviel took the notecard with a nod. After the nurse left, he wrapped Elarian in a hug. “You’re pregnant!”
Laughing, Elarian hugged him back. “We’re going to have a baby!”

Traviel bit back a yawn as he walked into the kitchen. Elarian was sitting at the table, shoveling cereal into his mouth.
“Can I make you breakfast?” Traviel offered.
“Dis id ‘ood,” Elarian said. He shallowed sheepishly. “Sorry.”
“It’s no trouble, if you’d like me to cook. Or I can run to Sweet Bites for something?”
“Thank you, my love, but I’m just in a cereal mood this morning. I’m happy to cook you something though.” Elarian started to get up, but Traviel stopped him, then pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
“Sit. I’ll fend for myself.” Traviel got out a bowl and a spoon for his own cereal, glancing at the clock. “It’s late; you shouldn’t have let me sleep in.”
“You’ll be glad for the sleep in a few months,” Elarian teased. “Besides, if your body let you sleep so late, you needed it. You worked hard yesterday.”
Traviel shrugged helplessly. “Everyone wants work done in their yards this time of year. Business is booming.” He smiled. “Someone is going to be spoiled.”
“I’m sorry I can’t help more.” Elarian arched an eyebrow at his mate. “Well, sorryyouwon’t let me help more.”
“You’re making our baby. That’s more than enough.”
Elarian set a hand on his rounded belly. “We’re almost there.”
“When does the third trimester start?”
“Today.”
Traviel nearly choked on a spoonful of cereal. “Already?! We haven’t even started the nursery yet!”

“Travis? Excuse me, Travis?”
I bit back an annoyed sigh. Right in the middle of my latest book. “Yeah?” I turned and immediately regretted feeling annoyed by the interruption. It was Ruby, the barista, holding a large plastic bag and a to-go cup of coffee.
“Closing time already?” I asked in surprise.
“Looked like you were pretty absorbed. What’s your book about?” She leaned forward to look as I closed my laptop. “Elves,” I said vaguely.
“I’d love to read it.”
“Maybe, when it’s done.” I took the bag and coffee from her. “Thank you. Really.”
She smiled sadly at me. “Anytime. Get home safe, it’s raining pretty hard.”
I nodded and started packing up, taking care to make sure my laptop would stay dry. In my head, I kept the scene going, sending Traviel and Elarian to the store for a baby shopping spree. Wouldn’t it be nice to afford that?
