“I'm at a bit of a stopping point too,” he said, closing his own laptop. “I think it’s just about lunchtime.

“Lunch sounds good.”

He started to stand, then paused to reach into his pocket with a slight frown. He pulled out his phone, took a look at the screen, and his eyes widened. Travis snapped his head up to me. “It's the hospital!”

I have stood, swallowing hard. This was it.

“Hello?” he said. “Yes.” I waited with bated breath as he exchanged a few words with whoever was on the other end. “Thank you,” he said softly. “Thank you very much.” He hung up. A slow look of disbelief crossed his face as he stared down at his phone. “I'm… I’m about one-eighth wandering elf,” he said in wonder.

“Gods,” I gasped.

He let out a disbelieving laugh. “I'm part wandering elf!”

I couldn't stop a smile from spreading across my face. “No,” I said, as I crossed the room. He looked up at me questioningly and I wrapped my hands around his, phone and all. “You’re just an elf now too,” I said, grinning from ear to ear.

“Yeah,” he said with another disbelieving chuckle. “I'm an elf!”

We threw our arms around each other at the same moment and I just hugged my soulmate as hard as I could. After years of seeing happy couples together at long last I had someone of my own. Someone to come home to. My curse was broken. I could have a home.

We kissed for a long, tender moment before I finally stepped away, looking at him.

“I love you, Travis,” I said. I meant it with all my heart.

“I love you too, Falkanar.” He looked over my shoulder and smiled. “I guess it's a good thing I bought that stocking for you.”

I laughed.

“I wonder…” he said. “Do you think it's possible that I was to cursed too?”

“I don't know. I've only met a couple of half-bloods, and I think they both were.”

Travis shook his head slowly as he thought. “It's just that… I've lived a lot of my life on the move. I always kind of chalked it up to going from job to job. If I had an opportunity on the other side of the country, I took it. But when I think about it, I've never really settled down and felt like any one place is home. I can stay for more than a couple weeks, obviously, but…”

“That does sound like you may have gotten a sort of curse-lite,” I joked. “Do you still feel that way?”

“Don't say anything to Traviel and Elarian,” he said. “But, I honestly wasn't sure I was going to stay in Vale Valley,” he admitted.

“You didn't even feel content here?” I asked in surprise. “In a house of your own.?

“It was just that. It was ahouse. I didn't feel any sort of affinity or connection to it. And Vale Valley is beautiful, but I kind of started to feel that I had seen everything there was to see. Now though… ever since we started decorating, it's felt more and more like ahome.” He tilted his head, studying me. “Maybe it's because you were here if you…” He cleared his throat nervously. “Can we make thisourhome?”

“Yes. Gods, I…” My voice choked off with tears.

“Don't cry,” Travis said softly.

“Sorry. I'm really not a crier, I promise,” I said. “I just got a little emotional there all of a sudden.” I wiped my tears away with an embarrassed to laugh.

“If you can't cry in front of your soulmate, who can you cry to?”

My stomach rumbled in answer and we both laughed.

“Why don't you join me inourkitchen?” he offered.

Grinning from ear to ear, I followed him and helped him prepare a simple lunch.

“Now we get to plan how we're going to spend Christmas,” he said happily.

“Oh, wow, you're right! We do get to plan how to spend Christmas together.”
