“And every day before then.” Travis smiled at me.
“And every day after.” I took a bite of my sandwich and almost immediately gagged. “Ugh,” I said, feeling an odd rumble in my stomach. “The cheese is still good, isn't it? It tastes… kind of off.”
He carefully took a bite of his own grilled cheese. “It tastes fine to me,” he said.
I took another experimental bite, trying to identify what was wrong. “Mine is… tangy somehow. Acidic?” This time, I spit it out. All at once my face felt hot and my mouth felt dry. I lurched away from the table and rushed into the bathroom.
“Falkanar?” Travis cried in alarm as I sprinted away.
I threw myself over the toilet and made it just in time. The first bite of my sandwich, and everything else, quickly came up. I sagged down to my knees next to the toilet. Travis joined me.
“Are you okay?” he asked in alarm. He knelt down and started gently rubbing my back.
“I feel a lot better now,” I said. “I swear that cheese just tasted…foul. Maybe I'm just nervous about finally having a home,” I laughed.
He he gave me a kiss on top of the head and then wet a washcloth and handed it to me.
“Oh, thank you,” I said, careful mopping my face with it. By the time I was done, he was there with a glass of cold water. “Thank you again.”
“Elarian had bad morning sickness,” he said. “I'm used to taking care of someone who's throwing up.”
We laughed, but his words struck a chord in me.Morning sickness. I looked up at him sharply. “What did the hospital say?”
“What? They said I'm one-eight wandering elf.”
“Is thatallthey said? Did they sayanythingelse?” I demanded.
His eyes narrowed. “Yeah… they said um… what was the word?”
“Alpha?” I guessed.
“Yes! That was it. They said I'm one-eighth alpha wandering elf. I wasn't really sure what that meant.”
“Oh gods,” I groaned.
“What's wrong?” he asked.
“It didn't even occur to me,” I said slowly. I sat back somewhat hard on the tiled floor and put a hand over my stomach. “I'm an omega! I didn't think it mattered when I thought you were human.”
“Why does that matter? Are alphas and uh, omegas…” He stumbled slightly over the unfamiliar terms. “Not compatible?”
“Oh, we're compatible,” I said awkwardly. “Verycompatible.”
No. No! I quickly dismissed it. No way.
Travis looked at me skeptically. “If you say so. You sure you're okay?”
I cleared my throat. “Yeah, I just need a minute.”
He nodded agreeably. “Let me know if you need me.”
As he left the room, I groaned and tilted my head back until it was resting on the cool tile of the bathroom wall. He didn't know about alphas and omegas. How was that possible? He obviously knew about Elarian’s pregnancy. In fact, it even sounded like he had written the pregnancy into his book himself. So, didn't hehaveto know about alphas and omegas? Maybe not. In just the few short days we had spent together, it was very clear to me that there were still a lot of things he was learning about our world. Maybe hedidn'tknow that an alpha elf could impregnate an omega one.
Not that I was pregnant.
Right?
I stood and looked at myself in the mirror. Would I feel any different if I was only a couple of weeks along? Maybe I was just overreacting. Yeah, I told myself. I was overreacting. It was just nerves, not morning sickness.
