“I am…” Avery said, sounding somewhat distracted, “taking measurements and checking out baby, to make sure that everything looks good and get a gestational age...”
We let him work in silence for a minute. And then he made a satisfied sound, removed the paddle from Lucas, and shut his laptop. “There we go! Everything looks great, baby is healthy, you look healthy. And it looks like you're on track to deliver just after the next full moon.”
“So, it really does only last three months,” Lucas said.
Avery nodded and then tilted his head at me. “Tagger says he's staying with you.?” I nodded. “Are you ready in case he gives birth there?”
“I can be.” I hadn't considered that part when I agreed to let him stay with me. “I mean, nothing is baby proof,” I said. “And I have a lot of stairs.”
Avery laughed. “I don't think you're going to have to worry about the baby and stairs for a little while. And hopefully everything will be sorted by then and Lucas will be on his way. Right?”
“Then yeah, I guess I'm ready to host them both.”
“Okay.” Avery wiped off Lucas’s stomach and helped him sit up. “You're good to go.”
“That was it?”
“That was it.” Avery handed Lucas the pictures.
Lucas stretched a little and rotated one shoulder, rubbing at his collarbone before slowly standing. Then he accepted the pictures from Avery with a smile. “Thank you.”
“I expect I'll be seeing you again soon,” Avery said. “I'd like to come in and check on you in another two weeks.”
“Oh,” Lucas said. “Okay.” He glanced at me and I nodded.
“Absolutely. Give me a call whenever you need to,” I said.
Avery nodded and headed out, leaving the two of us alone.
“Thanks for staying with me, Kessel,” Lucas said. “I… I know that was probably kind of weird, but I suddenly felt like I didn't want to be alone.”
“That's fine,” I said. “I was happy to help. Are you okay? I know this is all pretty tough for you.”
“I think I'm okay. It's definitely tough.” He chuckled nervously. “And not at all what I ever expected.”
I nodded and found myself resisting the urge to hug him. “Do you want to shower or anything before we hit the road?” I asked instead.
“Are we leaving this soon?” I could tell Lucas wasn’t thrilled with the idea.
“The sooner the better,” I said honestly. “I have to go track down Tagger and we’ll be ready when you are.”
“I guess I’ll just… get my clothes,” he said.
“Feel free to grab an extra pair,” I offered. “Once you’re settled in, I can buy you more.”
He looked surprised by the offer. If I was honest, I sort of surprised myself. Then, his expression turned a bit concerned.
“What are they for anyway?”
“What?”
“The clothes. And those… those rooms.”
“We stay over sometimes. Get dirty, work out. It’s nice to have a room to crash in.”
“Oh.” His brow furrowed.
“I’ll be right back,” I said quickly. “Unless you want that shower.”
