The only sound was the echoing roar of the furious bear, growing fainter with every second.
‘Kessel!’Someone was screaming in my head.
~~~***~~~
I woke up to find myself staring up at a wooden plank ceiling. I tried to move but I couldn't. Everything felt heavy, including my head. What the hell happened? I moved one shoulder successfully and tried to sit up a little more.
“Kessel!”
I turned my head and there, sitting next to me cheeks streaked with tears, was Lucas. My true mate.
“Lucas,” I said, trying to sit up again.
He pressed a hand to my shoulder, holding me down. “It's okay,” he said, but another tear rolled down his cheek.
“Why are you crying?” I asked.
He sniffed and wiped his tear away. “You almost died!”
I shook my head a little, trying to remember.
“You went head to head with a grizzly bear,” he gasped. I remembered the feel of something slamming into me. “Dev says Knash swatted you out of the air and tried to crush you.” His chin trembled and he swallowed hard. “You… you changed back into a human and they couldn't get you to shift back to heal faster. They didn't think you were going to…” Another tear rolled down his cheek.
“Guess I showed them,” I said hoarsely.
Lucas laughed weakly, then leaned down and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. I felt a suppressed sob as he rested his forehead against my cheek.
“Knash broke most of your ribs,” he told me softly. “And both arms, well, wings. And your back in three places.”
I tried to wiggle my toes and failed. Well that explained why I couldn't move. Lucas sat back up and wiped away a another tear. “And your internal organs are all...” He shook his head. “Catastrophic injury is what Dr. Craik called it.” His voice broke and he swallowed again. “God, I'm so glad you're awake.”
I wasn't sure if I was waking up more or what, but I was suddenly starting toreallyhurt everywhere. “Where am I?”
“Dr. Craik's cabin,” he said. “It was nearby and he still had a sort of operating room set up from when Adam gave birth. We brought you straight here. He doesn't want you to get up for the rest of the day and wants you to shift as soon as the sun sets.”
I nodded. “Yeah, I don't think I'm going anywhere. Where’s the baby?”
“Sharing a crib with Alcor. Napping.”
I nodded, relieved that everyone was safe. “Wait, Alcor?”
“Adam and Nolan’s baby.”
“What?!”
Lucas smiled. “They’re true mates.”
“No shit.” I laughed. “What are the odds?” I grinned, I had liked Adam. He and Nolan would be a good couple. I supposed we both had Knash to thank, in a roundabout away. “What happened to the Knash?”
“He's in custody,” Lucas said. “Thanks to you.”
“Thanks to me?” I said in surprise.
“You blinded him. He's healed now of course, but it was enough for Dev to hold him off until the others got there. He's at the warden station and they say the Alpha Parliament is coming to, I don't know interrogate him, I guess.”
I smiled. So much for being a useless owl. I had stopped the feral bear and protected my mate.
I tried to get comfortable and groaned in pain.
