“Why am I so nervous?” Shea cuddled into my side on the couch. “Every appointment has been perfect. Tell me I’m being ridiculous.”
“You’re not. You’re being a good dad.” He kissed the top of my head and reached for the bottle of water on the coffee table. “You have ten minutes to finish this or we have to reschedule.” I reminded him.
The day of our big ultrasound was here and while Shea worried about things not being perfect, I didn’t have the same worry. I felt it in my gut that our baby was beyond perfect. He was going to be just as amazing as his dad.
I was more worried about Shea not having an accident. They were cruel to expect anyone to drink that amount of water in such a short period of time and then hold it all in. Just looking at it had me thinking I needed to go.
“I’m going to grab a change of clothes in case any of that gel gets on me.” I eased myself up. “Do you want me to get one for you?” There. That sounded better than let’s bring some clothes because you are not a camel.
“Gods, I love you.” He chugged a bunch of his water. “You can grab me some and you don’t need the facade of bringing your own, though I do appreciate it.”
“Am I wrong?”
“No. You most definitely are not.” He took another chug. “They better not keep us waiting too long.”
They kept us waiting almost an hour, Shea pacing back and forth as our little one decided it would be fun to try out some dance moves on his bladder.
When I asked how long it would be until we were seen, the receptionist apologized and told me to let Shea know he could pee just a little bit if he really needed to. Because that was a thing.
Finally the nurse called Shea’s name and brought us back.
“We’re just going to get your vitals.” He led us to a little station with a scale and blood pressure monitor. “We’ll start with your weight.”
Shea stood on the scale. He was already self-conscious of his weight and being weighed every visit wasn’t helping that. I personally thought he looked sexy as hell.
“Remember you are only figuratively eating for two.” The nurse’s sugary sweet reprimand had me ready to throw down. “At this point in your pregnancy you shouldn’t be gaining more than a pound a week and you gained over two this week.”
“And you had me drink two pounds of water and won’t let me pee,” Shea snapped right back.Ididn’t need to throw down; my omega had this. Knowing our baby had a father who took no guff… what a lucky baby.
“I... let’s get your blood pressure now.” Which was miraculously perfect even after the nurse’s crap. Mine was probably through the roof.
We were led down the hall to a small room, the tech waiting outside to great up. “Welcome dads. I’m Gio and I’m going to be your tech for the day.” They stepped inside and we followed. “We’ll have you hop upon the table and get this thing started. I apologize for the delay, the second tech decided it was a good day to have their baby.”
How could anyone be mad at that?
Gio explained what was going to be happening as he did a bunch of things on the computer. “This is a regular ultrasound, not one of the ones you see advertised in the parents to be magazines in the waiting room.” He set the expectations as he rubbed some gel on Shea’s belly.
Shea winced.
“Did that hurt?” Gio’s face turned suddenly serious.
“No. Gotta pee.” Shea explained and both Gio and I let out a sigh of relief. “Didn’t mean to make you two worry.” He giggled.
“How about we do the pieces we need your bladder full for first and then you can pee and we can finish up?”
“Yes. Let’s do that.” Shea reached for my hand and I held onto it as Gio showed us our baby for the first time. They didn’t look much more than a blob... a beautiful blob. As he pointed out each body part, I took his word for it until they gave the full profile.
“It looks like a baby.” I sounded just as shocked as I felt. “We have a baby in there.”
“We do.” Shea Squeezed my hand.
“Are you two interested in knowing the sex?” Gio asked, wand in hand.
We’d discussed it and decided that whenever we discovered the sex it would be a surprise. Why wait?
“We want to know.” Shea said.
