“Thank you. You’re the only—I mean, I haven’t had many women here.”

“You sure? Because you are an above-average fuck, to put it mildly. Can’t learn that in a vacuum or from the internet.”

He grinned. “I didn’t say I didn’t fuck. Just that I haven’t had many overnight guests.”

“Ah.” She was already wriggling out of her shorts and “Reading Is Lit” T-shirt. Always the gentleman, he gallantly stepped forth to relieve her of her panties. Then she crooked a finger at him, but when his handswent to his belt, she shook her head. “Naw. Now and again I like to indulge my CMNF kink. Clothed male, nude female,” she added before he could ask.

“Far be it from me to complain.” He settled against her and groaned as she started wriggling against him.

“I thought about fucking you in front of the obsession wall, but that would have been weird.”

“Weird is a sliding scale.” He sucked in breath; it had taken her about two seconds to unbuckle his belt, pull down his fly, and reach for him. She squeezed, smiling as he stiffened in her hand. “Which is something I never thought I’d say during foreplay.”

She laughed. “That’s okay. ‘Fuck you in front of your obsession wall’ was something I never thoughtI’dsay.”

“A week of firsts” was all he managed before his eyes rolled back, and he was wholly hers, as he always had been, but never dared hope for.

CHAPTER FORTY-THREE

The next morning, Amanda was trying to figure out if they should fuck in the mystery section or test preparation section, as Sean did his best to distract her, which he was damned good at. They were both coming off long dry spells, and she’d probably be sore tomorrow, but who cared?

Just when the kissing and groping had started to get interesting, they were interrupted, which she should have predicted. “Knew I should’ve locked the door.”

“At ten o’clock in the morning on a weekday,” he teased. “Dave was right, howdoyou make any money?”

They heard an aggrieved sigh and left the shelves to find Sidney helping herself to coffee. “D’you two think you can stop eating each other’s faces for ten seconds?”

“Easily. Go ahead, Sid, start the countdown.”

“Rhetorical question, you horny dope.”

“How are you feeling, Sid?” she asked sweetly. “Need a barf bag?”

“Yeah, actually.”

“I set myself up for that one,” Amanda admitted. She pushed past Sidney to get her own coffee as Sean, adorably sex flushed, adjusted hisclothing. “And ohhhh, poor Dave. He was almost as much a wreck as Sidney.”

“Fuck you, it was traumatizing as shit.”

Sean nodded. “You’ll get no argument from either of us.”

“At least now we know how Marcus came to hire Dave to build his monument to murder ... he’d been poking around Prescott. Just another way to keep an eye on what was going on, I suppose.”

“Efficient but creepy. Marcus Garner in a nutshell.”

The frog croaked again, and here came Cassandra with a smile so big and bright Amanda wondered if Iris was getting early parole. “Hi, guys! What’s up?”

“What’s up is why aren’t you still traumatized?”

“I am. If it makes you feel better, my normal night terrors are on a much-deserved vacation. This morning I screamed myself awake because of Marcus Garner.”

“That’s the upside to trauma,” Amanda said. For all Cassandra’s light tone, Amanda had the sense the woman was telling the truth, and she couldn’t resist setting her coffee down and giving Cassandra a hug. “You get all-new night terrors instead of reruns. So what are you grinning about? I’ve seen smaller smirks on jack-o’-lanterns.”

“Okay, well, now that we’ve cleared my name—”

“Which never needed clearing.”

“—I can share my big fat news. I sold a book!”
