Carmen always wore a serious expression on her face when she was in character, but in this moment, she allowed her vulnerability to show because I had just allowed mine. She slowly tilt her head to the side and let out a low exhale while staring deeply into my eyes. “Dominic ‘the Miami King’ Royal. You have always been my protector just like I’ve been yours and when it comes to this child,” she said as she briefly paused andpointed at her stomach putting emphasis on it, “I know we will die about what matters to us the most and I will protect our baby just the same as you would if you couldn’t be around.” She continued as a lone tear cascaded down her face. She used her finger to catch it. “I will take fifty rounds of led pumped in me before I ever allow anything to happen. I can promise you that.”

I felt her words tugging on my heart. This has been by far the scariest, proudest moment I’d ever felt in life besides when I touched my first brick that made me millions later on down the line. “I know,” I took a deep breath and then another sip of the Henny allowing it to burn once again. “Trust me, I know.”

She shifted her weight from one leg to the other and asked, “so what about Victoria? What now?”

“What about her?”

“What is she going to do?”

“I have a feelin’ she’ll leave.” I told her.

“Will you kill her next?” She asked with an eyebrow slightly raised.

I continued to look down below once again. “I could easily get rid of her with a simple phone call right now if I wanted, but would that be smart? Hell no, El Blanca is gone, and killing Victoria right now will initiate something different, something we don’t want to go to war with at this very moment. It’s a bigger picture; we don’t need that kind of pressure on us right now especially with all the press floating around with the Royal cartel attached to it because of El Blanca’s death. You know I’m smarter than that.”

A small smile appeared on her face before she spoke. “I was hoping you’d say that. One thing they can’t take away from you is you’re a thinker and very smart. You’re right, killing her wouldn’t be smart at all. I think she needs to go back and show face for his services. Whatever happens after that, it just happens. We built an empire to be ready for anything headingour way but in the meantime, I’m still fighting these cases and baking a bun.”

“About that…” I started.

She held one hand up cutting me off while shaking her head. “Nope! Don’t you dare Dom, I’m pregnant not handicap. I keep telling you that. I’m going back inside.” She walked away still shaking her head. I hated to see her go but loved to watch her leave because it was beautiful sight to see.

When she was gone, I sent out a message through the encrypted group to my lieutenants:

Keep your eyes open in Cuba. Don’t move yet, let them expose themselves first.

Then I tried calling Dique again and still got his voicemail. I called Tone next. “Yo,” Tone said, in a low voice.

“You heard from Dique?” I asked.

“Not yet, but I’m headed toward his side now. You want me to swing by?”

“Yeah, check on him. I don’t like he hasn’t been answering all morning.”

Tone let out a short laugh. “Man, you know Dique, he probably laid up at Keondra’s house, ignoring his phone ‘cause she finally put the pussy on that nigga again. Probably over there makin’ another baby and shit. Dude don’t ever not answer no calls, but I know for a fact he won’t answer if he fucked up like that.”

I couldn’t help but shake my head because he said exactly what I didn’t want to think. After we left our parent’s house last night, I don’t know where the fuck Dique went but if he did do some dumb shit like that he was out of his mind. “Matter fact, swing by there too. If he is, tell him he better answer before I come up over there myself and drag his out. If he has anymore females around here talking about he’s the daddy, I’m making an executive order to have his ass fixed.”

Tone chuckled, “You got it, boss. I’ll let you know what’s up.”

I ended the call then I poured another drink and looked over at Carmen again. She was standing near the counter, flipping through her phone with that calm look she always had. I caught myself smiling because this woman gave me balance even when I didn’t want to see it. The world could be on fire, and she’d still move like it was ice cold without panicking. That was the difference between power and panic, and I had both sitting in my living room at this very moment. My phone lit up again with another encrypted call. This one wasn’t Tone though. I recognized the number. It was one of my people assigned to keep eyes on Victoria. I grabbed the phone, already knowing it wasn’t gon’ be good.

“Yeah,” I said.

“Boss,” Luis spoke fast, yet calm. “We been watching her like you said. She been quiet for the most part, just shopping and cooking, but she just told us to take her to the airport. Says she’s going home and she has her bags packed, with her passport and everything ready. She claims she’s going to her uncle’s, funeral.

I sat forward, rubbing my face. “You let her leave yet?”

“Hell nah,” Luis said. “We told her we had to wait for clearance. She’s in the condo right now pacing back and forth mad as hell we won’t take her until we get the word from you. We posted outside her door.”

“Good,” I said in a steady tone. “Keep her ass right there. Don’t let her step out, don’t let her breathe too far from that door until I get there. I’m on my way.”

“Alright boss.”

The call ended, and I tossed the phone on the counter before I even stood up. Carmen looked up from her phone, with that sharp look of curiosity in her eyes like she already knew something was off. “What happened?”

“It’s Victoria,” I said, removing my Glock from the counter tucking it in the small of my back. “She trying to run to Cuba, but my people won’t take her unless I give the okay.”

Carmen let out a slow exhale and sat back against the counter, crossing her arms across her chest. “Soooo, what are you gonna do?”
