“You’ve never been a doofus, Zoe. Not a single day in your life.”
“Liar.”
He takes one of my hands. “Do you know how much I love you?”
“I have some idea,” I say with a laugh. “But maybe we should get into that later?” My gaze flicks toward Tremaine, who’s still pointing his phone at us for some reason.
“Now is a perfect time.” Suddenly his expression is dead serious. “This past year has been the best of my life. Every day when I wake up, the first thing I want to do is talk to you, or skate with you, or even…” The corners of his mouth quirk up. “You get the idea. You’re my whole world. So will you make me the happiest man in hockey and wear this?” He pulls a little velvet box out of the pocket of his sweatpants.
“Is that really…” I gasp.
“Well, it’s not a tiny pizza,” he says, opening the lid and handing me the box, which contains averybeautiful diamond ring.
For a split second I can only stare at it. Then I let out a squeak of glee. “It’s gorgeous!”
He pops up onto his feet and pulls me into his arms. “Do I hear a yes?”
“YES!” I shriek, still staring at the ring over his shoulder. “Can I put it on?”
“Of course, beautiful,” he says, kissing my sweaty neck.
I slip the ring out of its satin cushion and onto my finger. “Look who’s sparklingnow?”
He laughs and then scoops me off my feet to twirl me around.
And that’s the photo we have on the wall of our penthouse at The Lair—Chase and me, on skates, having more fun together than we were ever meant to have. And it’s perfect.
