Emma paused at the door, chewing her lower lip. She knew that if she didn’t speak her mind, she’d regret it.

Closing the door, she jumped at the sound of it latching. Archie’s words rang in her ears as she cleared her throat and turned to face her husband-to-be.

“I’ve come to ask what the Laird expects of me as his wife,” Emma stated. “If we are still to be wed, that is.”

“What makes ye think I’ve changed me mind?” he inquired as he pushed off the wall and approached her.

“The way ye left dinner, I must have offended ye. I thought ye had changed yer mind, and I came here to ensure that our agreement still stands,” Emma said, trying not to choke on her words as she watched him inch closer.

He approached her, his tone threatening as he laid out another rule. “Ye want to ken what I want from me future wife? I want her obedience. And never ask about me past again.”

“I’m sorry,” Emma stated. “It willnae happen again.”

“And how am I to ken that?”

“Trust,” Emma stated plainly as Hunter stepped ever closer, blocking any escape route.

“And do ye trust me?” he asked, his eyes glittering as she held her position.

Emma found herself trapped between the door and his body.

“I trust that ye wouldnae hurt an innocent person,” she replied, her heart pounding.

“Do ye trust me now?” he repeated, getting even closer, until they shared the same hot, stifling air.

Emma’s cheeks flushed, but she managed a nod.

“Then ye ken I willnae do anything ye dinnae ask for,” he said, a smirk playing on his lips as he watched her blush deepen.

Emma met his gaze, her voice barely above a whisper. “Does that mean ye’d do anything I ask?”

“Careful, lass,” he warned. “Ye may ask somethin’ of me, but ye may nae like what I give ye. But I’m curious, what would ye ask of me that ye havenae already?”

“I think we should see if we are well-matched,” she ventured.

Her words hung in the air between them as her cheeks flushed even hotter.

She hoped he’d decipher her concealed request, saving her the embarrassment of having to beg for his touch. Her heart pounded like a drum in her chest, betraying her anticipation.

There was a flicker in Hunter’s eyes, a spark of intrigue. He lifted an eyebrow at her suggestion, and his hand came up to gently stroke her cheek.

“Is that so?” His voice was low, a gravelly murmur that sent shivers down her spine.

Emma simply nodded, her voice betraying her at that moment.

And then, before she could fully comprehend the weight of the situation, Hunter’s warm and insistent lips found hers in a sweet collision that swept her off her feet.

Emma could hardly process the myriad of emotions coursing through her, but she knew one thing for sure—this was exactly what she wanted.

Their kiss was like a dance, each move perfectly in sync with the other. Hunter’s hands roamed over her body, setting every nerve on fire as they explored every inch of skin. Emma let herself get lost in the moment, surrendering to the pleasure that pulsed between them.

“Ye should go,” he stuttered as he pulled away from the kiss and rested a weary hand on the door.

His heart thumped against his ribs. Emma’s gaze burned him, holding him in place, like roots to a tree. With every breath he shared with her, he found his resolve waning.

Unable to resist any longer, he wrapped his hand around the nape of her neck and drew her close once more.
