She shakes her head, unfazed.
“Busy girl, I see.”
“Yeah, I’m in the middle of something.” I hear a notification going off on her end. She huffs, picking up the phone. “Can I call you later?”
“Definitely not.”
I watch the screen. I think she swiped me out of the way because it looks like she’s texting. I side-eye the phone as I lean back and bite my pen. Her face is neutral as she types away and then she looks into the screen at herself, placing it against something as I pretend to be studying.
I hear the notification go off again and watch her tap away on her phone.
“I can still see you,” she mutters.
I lean forward. “Who are you texting?”
“None of your business,” she says, ignoring me.
“Tell them to stop texting you. They’re distracting you from your work.”
I think she puts me back to full screen because now she’s holding the phone at arm’s length, looking cute as frick.
“You’re the one distracting me.”
I hear the notification go off again as I smile. “Prop the phone up and let’s get work done together.”
Chapter 21
Another notification comes through, and I see Matt’s annoyance growing.
“Is it the guy from the Grind Stone today?” Matt asks.
I shake my head, looking into my phone with an irritated face. I glance at myself in the corner. My eyebrows are furrowed, my lips pursed, and my eyes are narrowed. “No.”
My laptop keeps notifying me of Riley’s texts, and now I’m getting embarrassed about it.
Amber: Matt texted me and then called and now we’re facetiming
Riley: What! Omg. Take a screenshot, I need proof
Amber: I’m not going to take a screenshot
Riley: Why not? Take a photo or it didn’t happen
Riley: What is he saying?
Amber: He thinks I’m texting Kyle right now
Riley: Kyle? The guy you dated a few years ago? How does he know about Kyle?
Amber: He came into the Grind Stone today and asked me if I had the same number
Riley: Tell Matt that you’re texting him
Amber: Why would I do that?
Riley: Every guy loves a little competition
“Really?” Matt asks, catching my attention.
