“Yes.” I feel a sense of pride knowing that I’m buying the food, and he isn’t.

He grabs our food and then takes a table in the far corner. We sit across from each other. And when he looks at me, he says, “You’re so stubborn, you know that?”

I open the lid to my tacos and say, “I know.”

He smiles. “Are you like this with everyone?”

I shake my head, grabbing my first taco. “No.”

He watches me eat and then he takes a bite of his taco. Half of it fits in his mouth. If I were the male species, I would be very impressed by how much can fit in there.

“If you were on a date, would you let the guy pay?” he asks.

I cover my mouth while I chew and nod. Before I take another bite, I say, “Definitely.”

“If you were on a date, would you let the girl pay?” I ask after I swallow the food in my mouth.

He shrugs. “I just did.”

I scoff, blow out hot air, and roll my eyes all at once. “This isn’t a date.”

“It’s a friendly date. Two friends getting dinner.”

I lean in, forgetting about my favorite tacos. “Are you…” My eyes narrow. “Are you pulling a move?”

He licks his lips. “Trust me, if I was pulling a move, you’d know it.”

That lightens my mood, and I force myself not to smile.

“Touché,” I say, taking another bite.

Chapter 24

If the word stubborn had a mascot, Amber’s face would be it. If I googled the definition of difficult, her name would be the noun.

I finish off the tacos. They were delicious. When Amber finishes, she wipes her mouth and applies lip balm. Now I’m watching her like a fucking idiot, wondering what she tastes like.

She pops her lips and says, “Ready?”

“I’m just waiting on you,” I mutter.

She scowls. “Real nice.”

I chuckle, following her out to the parking lot. When I trail behind her to open the truck door for her, she turns to me and politely says, “I can get my own door.”

I’m tall enough to not listen and open it anyway. “I got it. Get in.”

She flicks those stunning eyes at me and listens.

When I start the truck, I say, “I know where to go for dessert.”

“Ice cream?” she asks, and I shake my head. I think watching her eat ice cream would put me in a coma. I’m trying to get this woman to lighten up, not murder me with cream on her lips.

“Better,” I say.

“So, is everything okay with you?” she asks.

“Yeah,” I answer.
