“Not in a million years.”
I laugh because I can live that long, longer even.
Milton sighs. “I need to inform the court what happened.”
I sit straight and pull my knees to my chest. “Wh… What?”
A smirk twitches his lips. He squeezes my arm. “Love, have you already forgotten about the fae trying to come through the portal?”
I look around, coming back from my orgasmic daze. “I… Was distracted momentarily.” I have to laugh at myself. Of course he needs to inform the court. “I’ve distracted you from doing your duty. I’m sor—”
Milton’s kiss stops my apology. “It’s fine. We sent them back, and the seal’s strong again thanks to your distraction and letting me use your energy. But I need to discuss with the courts what the next move should be. I’m not sure the portal’s strong enough for another attack.”
“I’m sorry.”
“There’s nothing to be sorry about. Charms fail, magic fades, wards need to be changed, the enemy gets stronger. I diligently do what I can, but sometimes one person isn’t enough. The courts will know how to help.”
We make our way to a door with a staircase. We were just in the basement of his cafe. He leads me to his apartment where we clean up.
After dressing in some of his too-big clothes, I remember we have a whole picnic left in my office, and the thought of leaving it overnight makes me gag. Luckily, I had my office keys in my pocket at the time of our abrupt departure.
I wrap my arms around his shoulders and lean in to breathe his lovely scent. “While you talk to the court, I’m going to head back to the office to clean up. I’ll be back shortly.”
Milton pats my arm. “Be careful. And take one of my jackets to cover your glow.”
Of course, Milton’s trying to watch over me, and I adore him for that. “Thanks. I’ll be back soon.” With fresh food, more than likely. Stomach still rumbling, I head out.
Chapter 12
Milton
The courts are enraged that King Evron sent someone to infiltrate the portal. I don’t watch the only portal to the human world. There are dozens more, but mine has the least protection. The courts never thought a portal in Southern Indiana would matter. Usually, gates have four guards so it’s never out of view of someone. At Faerie Good Coffee it’s just me with my charms and other magic. I’ve told the courts for years they needed more than me, but what do I know?
I grind my teeth, trying to find a diplomatic way to answer their latest message. While I try to decide, I dial Josh’s number.
His voice is chipper as always when he answers. “What can I do for ya, Milly?”
I hate the thought of shattering his happy little bubble. “I’m sorry, but I feel like you need to know…”
“Know what?” Josh’s voice is strained. Brendon’s in the background asking what’s going on.
“King Evron sent someone through the portal.”
Josh’s breathing goes harsh. “No, I thought we were safe. It’s been twenty years.”
“We forced the intruder back, but who knows if or when he’ll try again. I’m communicating with the courts now for a solution.”
There’s silence before he asks, “We?”
“Johnny helped.”
“You got it bad.” Brendon chuckles on the other end. Neither of them stay down for long.
“I really do.”
“Thanks for letting us know,” Josh says. “If anything else happens—”
“I’ll keep you informed.”
