“Much appreciated.”

I don’t feel any better when we hang up.

I hate this feeling of not knowing what to do. I’ve never had anyone from King Evron’s court try to come through. Others on the no travel list, yes. They were usually criminals trying to escape before the courts could punish them. They were easy to deal with. They didn’t have a pissed-off king to back them.

I’m so caught up in my thoughts I catch the scent of food before I hear Johnny moving around my apartment. When I turn to the door, he’s peeking inside.

“Dinner?” he says, lifting a bag.

“I was supposed to feed you.”

The bashful smile makes me melt. “I don’t mind feeding you instead. I’m just happy to be together.”

I push to my feet to take him in my arms and nuzzle my nose to his throat to breathe him in. “I’m happy to be together, too.” My heart wants to addfinallyto the statement. I’m glad Rain and the guys encouraged me to take a chance and ask Johnny to join us for game night.

I lead Johnny back to the kitchen where we spread out the food—he chose Chinese—and eat. Every morsel is a burst of flavor, much better than my planned sandwiches. I had a whole cute little picnic planned, but this is just as good, if not better, because Johnny’s in my space now. I want him here forever.

I reach out a hand and he gives me his as we eat. His face scrunches while he talks out the problems with the books at work. I don’t understand much of what he’s saying, but he’s adorably animated, and I can’t look away or interrupt him. Soon realization dawns over his face.

“I got it!” He fist pumps the air. “Itisa test. Thanks for letting me talk it out.”

He smiles as he finishes his food. I dab at a bit of sauce at the corner of his mouth, and he licks my thumb clean.

“Come here, love.”

He complies so easily. Slipping across my lap, he drapes his arms around my neck and leans against my chest. He’s taller than I am and to outsiders we might look like a strange couple, but I don’t care.

It’s not long before he moves to straddle my thighs and cups my cheeks. “Thank you.” His kiss starts as a slow peck before we deepen.

“For what?” I swipe his lips, and he lets me in. I love how he’s allowing himself to be bolder. Before he was so shy asking for what he wanted.

“Helping. I know you probably have no idea what I babbled on about, but it helped. A lot.”

“Glad to be of service.” I thread my fingers through his hair.

Johnny sighs before dropping his head to my shoulder. “I’m sorry, I need to go back to the office and finish what I was working on. Especially with everything fresh in my head.”

I squeeze him close. “Want me to come with you?”

“You probably still need to deal with the court?” He gives me a lopsided smile. He’s right.

“Too true.”

Johnny’s finger traces my collarbone. “Can I come back tonight? To sleep. I like waking up next to someone.”

“Of course. You can always stay the night.”

He slides off my lap and kisses my forehead. “I’ll text you on my way back.”

I squeeze his hand. “How hard is it for you to take time off?”

His face scrunches again. “If I get this done, Greg will probably let me do whatever I want.”

“I’m still trying to get you a permit to the Faelands. I’m hoping I can leverage the fact that you helped with the breach to get you in this week.”

Johnny nibbles his bottom lip. “I’ll put in the request for time off as soon as you let me know.”

I pull him in for one last kiss, and he melts into me.
