Johnny’s cheeks flush. “That’s what I hear.” Luckily there’s humor in his voice.

He glows more when he’s happy, and today he’s the brightest I’ve ever seen him.

“If you don’t mind, the courts await us,” I say.

“Absolutely. And we’re here for as long as you need us.”

“I’d like about a week, if that works?”

Greg apparently gave Johnny the time off with words of encouragement to relax. I plan to help him.

“Sounds perfect,” Raven says. “And we’ll keep the shop running like usual.”

“Thanks.” I was wary the first time, but they’re actually damn good at running the cafe.

Johnny squeezes my hand.

“Alright. All you need to do is step into the portal and allow the current to take you. You won’t drown so don’t panic if you can help yourself.”

He nods. “I’m so ready!”

We step into the reflective pool. Johnny stiffens beside me and crushes my hand as we sink into the portal.

“I’ve got you, love.”

He gives me the biggest brightest grin before he crashes his lips to mine. His fingers thread through my hair. As we continue through the portal he presses his forehead to mine.

“You’re amazing, Milton.”

“Torin,” I whisper.

Johnny tips his head taking me in as if for the first time.

“My true name.”

“Torin,” he whispers back.

Electricity thrums through my body at him saying my true name. I trust him.

A slurping sound interrupts us as the portal finally spits us out in the middle of the high court. It’s just as I remember. High ceiling, marble pillars, intricate gold patterns on the polished marble floor, stained glass windows making rainbows on the walls. It’s a beautiful room, but still leaves me cold.

“Milton,” someone calls my name, and I turn to the voice.

King Dravin sits elegantly on his throne. A beautiful ivory marble. His fiery red hair is braided in intricate patterns and beaded with pearls and gems. He’s updated his wardrobe to something a businessman from the human world would wear, though the suit is cream instead of the darker colors I’m used to. It suits him well.

I bow, which leads to Johnny bowing, but he’s still taking in his surroundings, his eyes so wide. I squeeze his hand and give him a smile.

“Your Royal Highness, may I present Johnny Radiant, the Will-o’-the-wisp who helped me keep the portal safe.”

King Dravin nods and waves for us to come closer. “Tell me about yourself, Johnny.”

Johnny swallows beside me before giving me a glance. “There’s nothing much to tell? I’m twenty-five. A Will-o’-the wisp. An accountant. I love books. Oh! Milton’s teaching me to read and speak fae.”

King Dravin nods. “You’re a sweet boy—”

“I’m not a boy in any sense of the word.”

I love how Johnny stands up for himself.
