The fae are obviously a pair by the way they hang on each other. Both are pretty, but Milton has my eye.

Rain pulls Avery to his side and scrubs the top of his head. “Avery’s an attorney. His office isn’t far from yours. Josh and Brendon work with me and the Night Guard keeping incubi fed.”

“Nice to meet you all.” I tip my head.

Everyone has shopping bags with them, Avery carries boxes of pizza to a clean table.

“I hope we have something you like to eat,” he says.

“I’m not picky.”

“Milly’s been talking about inviting you for ages. I’m glad he finally did,” Brendon says. “You’re cute.”

Josh gives him a playful shove with his shoulder.

“You know I only have eyes for you, babe. Even when I’m balls deep in someone else.” Brendon and Josh share a kiss.

Milton coughs behind me to stop the two as he moves past to put the quiches on a table.

“Let’s eat, I’m starving.” Rain arranges, then opens the pizza boxes. He steps back and waves for me to take the first spot in line. “We got meat, veggie, cheese, all the things. Take your pick, Johnny.”

I’m not sure I like being in the spotlight, but I grab a plate and pick the pieces I want before settling into a seat.

Chapter 4

Milton

I don’t know why I was so nervous. Of course when Johnny turned into a ball of light before my very eyes I thought I’d said something to offend him. No, he’s just going through changes. I feel for him, I really do. Fae don’t go through second puberty, which I’m grateful for. I have shifter friends that have talked about dealing with puberty a second time and I can’t imagine being an adult dealing with it.

With everyone here and eating, Johnny seems to be calming from the initial panic. I’m still not surewhyhe shifted. I’d only mentioned how I knew he liked my sugar cookies.

“Milly?” Josh says my nickname like he’s said it more than once.

I lift my head to find all of them facing me. “Uh, sorry. Off in la la land, what was that?”

“What should we play first?”

“I brought Twister.” Rain wiggles his brows. Because of course he brought Twister. He always does.

“I’m not very flexible,” Johnny says.

“That’s part of the fun!” Brendon shoves the rest of his pizza in his mouth.

Johnny approaches the game table, and his eyes light up. “You have Magic: The Gathering cards in here. Does everyone have a deck?”

“Yeah,” I say, but deflate. “But we don’t have an extra.”

“Don’t worry about that.” Johnny holds up a finger to indicate for us to wait, then runs from the space. The door dings, and he rushes from the cafe.

Josh turns to me. “So, he’s adorable.”

“He really is. Please say you’ve asked him out,” Brendon adds.

“Not yet.”

The door dings again. “Because… I have my own deck! I keep it in the glove box.”

Avery lifts a brow. “You travel with your Magic cards?”
