Devon wraps her arms around her stomach as she cackles. “The only cock that can satisfy you? Does he not know how many times he didn’t make you come?”

I snort at the thought. “I think he’s the least orgasmic partner I’ve had.Ever.” Not that I want to think about my childhood or teenage years. All those horrible people. I stare over Devon’s shoulder. There’s nothing there, but as the past plays in my head, I can’t look at her.

“Hey. Hey. Cy.” Devon tugs on my scrub shirt to grab my attention. “There you are. When is your appointment?”

I grin and show her the next text.

Dr. Graine: I have availability at 9AM if that works?

Devon nods. “Go on, answer.”

Cy: Perfect! Thanks!

Dr. Graine knows I work the overnight shift and always waits for me to answer before giving away the slot.

Dr. Graine: All yours. See you soon.

“Wanna grab breakfast before the appointment?” I ask.

“I’d love to, but my Norris wants to take me on a breakfast date.” Devon hugs her phone before showing me the sickly sweet text her fiancé sent her.

“I’m so happy for you. You know that, right?” If not a little jealous.

“I know. And Iknowyou’re going to find yourself the perfect guy for you.” She wraps me in another hug. “Seriously, call me.”

“Thanks.”

“See ya later.” Devon rushes from the locker room and it’s just me, my phone, and my thoughts.

I’m not sure staying here is for my greatest good. Mick will still be around and I hate the fact we might run into each other at the hospital. I… need a change. But how the hell can I leave Devon and Dr. Graine?

Chapter 5

Nox—One Month Later

Portal Place Diner is busy this afternoon. Almost every booth is taken with monsters or humans. Mick, a merman, sits across from me, oozing sex. The heady scent of his seduction wafts towards me and I wave it away. “Put it away, big guy. That doesn’t work on me.”

Something seems a little off, but it could just be that the merman is trying to seduce me. Sorry buddy, not working. Not even a twinge of desire rises in me.

“What can I do for you?” I steeple my fingers and lean forward. He is going to be a wily one, I just know it. But that means it should be highly entertaining for me.

“I want you to…” Mick waves his hand at me. “Do your Nightmare thing to my ex. Cyrus.” He digs his phone out of his pocket to show me a picture.

It’s Cyrus’s bright blue eyes that catch my attention first. They’re sad.Sosad, despite the smile on his face. Then the beautiful long brown hair. The freckles across his nose. And all the piercings. There’s a barbell in his brow, a stud in his nose, an industrial in one ear, then a bunch of other earrings along both ears. This man is stunning. Not to mention his dark aesthetic is the total opposite of my usual bright look.

“He’s gorgeous, isn’t he? It’s a shame he’s such a bad guy.”

“And what makes him bad?” I grab the phone to keep looking at this guy. What’s his story? And why is he so sad?

“He’s such a pathetic human.”

Alarm bells ring in my head. “What makes him pathetic?”

“You ask a lot of questions,” Mick grumbles.

“I’m just trying to get a vision of the guy so I know how to scare him the most.”

“Ha! That’s easy. Ask him to bend over and fuck. He tenses up. I have to help loosen him up.” Another wave of that seduction hits me, still not doing what Mick expects, if the frown is any indication. “He’s terrified of commitment. And horrible at communication. I’d ask him a question, and he’d freak out. It got tiresome after a while. An ass like that is worth it for only so long.”
